For my sins (!) I am considering getting a second horse to bring on and event this year, alongside my poor boy who is currently off with suspensory ligament damage, and when he (fingers crossed) gets over it I will be popping him out for a good few months to rest. Trouble is, there are no free boxes at my yard and so I can only have one stable, and in the short term I would have both horses needing to come in.

I don't want to move as it's a lovely yard where we are all friends, and the horses are happy. Does anyone else stable share (i.e. one horse in by day, the other at night, mucking out in between) and does it work? Are the horses happy with this, or do they feel that their stable is not their own territory as they can always smell another horse in there? I'd be really interested to see if anyone else manages this way! Thanks!

I did it one winter and it worked well. If it was terrible weather they'd happily stand inside together under supervision (and with a haynet each!)

I recently had 3 horses to one stable but they were mostly living out!
One winter I had two horses and one was in overnight and one was in during the day. It worked really well, they both had plenty to eat while they were in and they were both pleased to be turned out. There was a bit more mucking out to do but it was easily manageable.

My 9 month old filly sometimes shares a stable with her best buddy over night.

They also switch stables, depending on who is in, who is out and who needs what. Works fine.

my 17'2 mare and my 15'2 gelding would happily share a 16x16 box if the weather was really bad, lots of hay. But yes I would swap them over when I was short of stables one out in the day one out at night, worked well.

I often swap stables during the day depending on who is in and who is out, and what else is going on in the yard. When I let one wander freely around the yard he would often just pop into any stable with an open door and have a munch, wee etc then move on, and the real occupants never minded when they came back in. I do have two ponies (11.2 & 12.2) sharing all the time but it is a large horse stable, and as long as they have enough hay to go round then its fine.

does this count?!

During the summer me and my friend shared a stable. Mine was in during the day and then out at night and hers was vice versa. It seemed to work well

Also at a riding school i used to work at had a hay barn which they sectioned off a bit and ha 3 ponies in there. As long as they had different hay nets scattered around they all got on fine
