OK, my horse has had a soft lump for a few weeks now. Thought cause of fly bite, but can see no obvious bit and lump not going but also not growing. Now further down his jaw there is another lump which looks more swollen and slightly harder. Not sure if this is irritation from having headcollar on for fly mask. If he is still fine in self and eating and drinking is it a cause for worry? Should I just keep an eye on him? Have just changed vets and it is now a bigger surgery so not one I can just talk to vet, will actually have to call out. I am seeing a friend on Friday who has a yard so will also ask her opinion ie vet, but just wondered what you all think. Thanks

Saw dentist about 6 weeks ago, he had two wolf teeth out. Possible irritation after this do you think? Hes not showing any other trouble with mouth, usually I can tell due to lack of willingness to take bit and general fussyness with reins.

Could it be a blocked duct and just filling with pus? I know a horse with one of these it's about a penny size and hard doesn't bother him and told to leave it alone although vet could remove it if chose to, but would only be for cosmetic purposes. Horse has had it for a few years now.

Thats interesting, could be that. I am going to just keep a good eye on him and see if anything changes, ie eating, size of lump, character etc. He is due his annual vacination in Sept so will be seeing vet then. Of course will see vet before if needs be!!!

If the horse has recently had dental treatment it could be an infection which will need antibiotics to clear it up. I would call the vet tomorrow if I were you. It is best to have it checked out as it may be nothing but if infected will be painful for the horse and liable to get worse.

How old is the horse? Could be dental bumps if a younger horse, it is where the new molars are erupting from the jawline.

Do beware of infection though if you have had recent dental work.

I would get the vet out to check if you are worried but my old boy gets this. We had the vets out and vet said it is his "grass glands" - basically the salivary glands are overactive. Not a massive problem just cosmetic.

Basils go down in winter when he is in more and get really big in spring. If you like i'll try to get some pictures.

Basically one of his is just under his noseband and the other a bit higher.

Pictures would be good thanks, if you don't mind. Something to compare to. Thanks

Looks like his glands to me. In relation to his oral cavity...the salivary glands sit just above the lump in those photos. I wouldn't expect it to be trouble from having wolf teeth out a few weeks ago as they are in the upper jaw, and if infected you would have noticed it weeks ago. Looks like overactive glands and as others have said it is not much to worry about, but get your vet out if you are worried....or just send them the photos?
