Hi all, I'm after some advice if poss please :D

My gran's got my first pony up at her's and she's struggling with him atm, he's 12.3, 23 and a middle weight welsh B, he's had laminitus twice - so is prone. This summer he's been on about 1/2 an acre and a hand ful of chaff.

Now, for the last 2/3 months he's had really really awful diarrhea - there is no pattern to it, it's just constant. He's being fed on simple system's timothy chop and a scoop of grass nuts (the ones that soak).. we don't think it's feed related, and the grass he's been on isn't lush (as the risk of laminitus is to high).

In early August he dropped a lot of weight, you can see his ribs when he's stood still.. farrier saw him about 3 week's ago and said he's looking slightly under but wouldn't worry as the time of year was risky. Grandma put him onto about 2 acres along side the retired TB.. he's been on it for 3 week's and hasn't put any weight on at all - if anything he's dropped some.

She's got this paste thing to cleanse his gut? so she's trying that before taking a sample to the vet (she's just lost her husband - my grandad so she's been a little slower than usual).. but i'm wondering if anyone else has experienced this?

Also, i've suggested popping him on some feed now as i'd like him to put some weight on going into the winter... I suggest Alfa original and some beat.. can anyone suggest anything better/more suitable?

I honestly/my oh who's an apprentice farrier don't think he's at risk of laminitus as he is just SO skinny and poor looking. Spoke to my gran tonight and she's decided to leave him on the patch he's on (1 acre), feed a couple slices of hay at night and feed once a day (upping to twice when nov hits)..

Thought's?

Thank you in advance!

The vet has requested he has the cleanse thingy first.. then we'll get a sample taken in and a blood test taken at same time. As you can imagine, we've been a little busy what with funeral's etc but vet reasurred us that there's no need to rush.

Aren't pure feeds the same as simple system? <-- which hasn't been working on him.

My little pony 10hh is the same.He is a chronic laminitic and I usually struggle to keep him slim. This past few weeks has been different. He has been very loose for a while on and off and itchy and poor (ribby). I have his teeth checked regulary but can see he is not chewing easily - he is leaving all the fluffy bits of hay in a pile in his stable and only eating the coarser stuff.

I have upped my boy's feed to the amount I would feed a 14.2hh. He gets a quarter stubbs scoop of A&P verteran vitality and 2 handfuls of Speedi beet soaked and a handful of chaff twice daily - it looks like loads in the bucket but he wants it. To that I am adding NAF pink powders and ground carob form Valley Hope Feeds to firm up his poo.

I think it is his age (he's 22) and he is simply not chewing as well as not absorbing as much, hence the need for more and a mushy forage replacer.

I am going over to Pure Feeds for all of mine this winter and after consulting Lucinda she suggested this little one and my 17hh WB both go onto the Pure Work feed and my 2 good doers just have the Pure Balancer. I hope that will resolve his issues - I intend to saok his feed well and maybe add unmolassed sugar beet too.

here he is :

YasandCrystal - thank you for posting! Sounds pretty simular, Sixpence's teeth were done 6 months ago and he's eating his feed easily - so not sure it's his teeth...

He's still eating REALLY well, and scoffing it down very quickly.. it just seems to be going straight through him :(.

I shall look up all of what you've suggested - thanks!! :D

check teeth
and do a worm count and worm for tape and encysted
if he continues to drop weight i would get the vet out to do bloods
is he actually grazing?
one of my mares got the runs (not badly) i added in pink powder which helped alot
but cutting out all the molasses in her diet was the thing thats completely stopped it.
she gets no mixes or cubes now as most contain molasses.

Yes he's eating just like usual - scoffing morning feed, grazing and drinking usual amounts of water.

Think I may try pink powder with him and re worm!

Thanks
