Two sick dogs

Hi all, just a quick query for all you doggy people. Our two dogs went out on their normal walk this morning round the local fields. Came back and ate breakfast in fine spirits.

Got home from work to find the lab x 2 year old bitch off her legs. She could just about get up but very weak and wobbly on her back legs. Took her straight to the vets who couldn't find any pain at all on manipulation and wants her back in for testing tomorrow, he thinks neurological issues potentially. She had a Metacam injection but has been very quiet and sleepy all evening and seems quite cold which is not like her at all. Ate a light dinner well enough but worryingly quiet.

Our terrier seems generally off and had been sick at some point in the day, predominantly a dark browny liquid (sorry if TMI!). I suggested to the vet that I worried they could have eaten something of a poisonous nature on the walk this morning but he didn't seem to think so and thought it was more of a coincidence that the lab x was weak behind and terrier had been sick. What do you lot think.
 
Did you see them drink from any water courses? (Rivers, streams, lakes, puddles.)
Do you know who owns the land you walked over?
Was there any woodland that you traversed?
Did you see the dogs eat anything?
Are they fully vaccinated?

Unlikely at this time of year, but google animal health trust Seasonal Canine Disease.

Make sure your vets are taking this seriously....just in case.

Thanks for your helpful reply gunnerdog! My husband took them out this morning. There is a stream but he assures me he does not let them drink out of it, it was also very cold this morning so they were less likely to want to drink. They walk along field boundaries, so no wooded area as at all. We don't know the land owner, but dogs have been walked in the area for as long as we've lived here (10 years) and we've never seen any signs to suggest he may object to dog walking. In fact, my husband just stuck to the footpath this morning. He did not see them eat anything (although I'm not convinced on that one) and they are fully jabbed up to date. We have lovely neighbours so no chance of them putting anything down. One thing I was wondering about was potentially rock salt poisoning
? The roads had been gritted this morning and they do cross a road to get to the field. They both still look rough and very sleepy but the lab x has since got herself up and been for a wee and taken herself upstairs successfully and the terrier has had no more gastro symptoms. Hoping the morning brings more postivity! Makes me want to keep them on a lead forever, but that's no life for a dog.
 
It could be that they may have picked something up on their paws from the roads that have been gritted. It has been know that there is something in what they use to grit the roads with that has made dogs ill.

Hope they are feeling better soon.
 
springtime...I hope your dogs are back to good health soon..what a worry.

Milo Molly....Thankyou!....after reading that link I've resoved to wash my dogs feet every time we get back from a walk...the roads are literally thick with sand and salt. in fact ,after a quick wash of the dogs feet I ,at least ,am a bit more relaxed.
my last dog died from kidney issues(bacterial related)a nd I wouldn't wish it on anyone...

Hi and thanks for all your helpful comments and concern. Thankfully they appeared to make a good recovery and are now back to fine form. The lab cross made a remarkable recovery - Tuesday night she was just awful, she even wet where she was lying showing she had no control over her back end at all. However, by Wednesday morning she seemed fine. I still maintain that they were poisoned by something as I can see no other explanation of why they were so sick so suddenly and our third dog was unaffected - she is 16 so doesn't really walk anymore. Still, they seen fine now, such a relief!
