Please can any of you help and give some advise regarding tying up. Did long distance ride yesterday and had a 2 hour journey back - turned out for 3 hours when we got home drank plenty of water given salt in feed last night and again today - been out all day on big field but when i got her in her back legs were very stiff - head groom touched ham strings and got reaction so she gave them a good massage and it seemed to help - my question is, is this tying up, if it is what shall i do in future to stop it happening, if it isnt what can i do to stop it happening - i dont feed any cereal by the way - thanks x

My TB mare is prone to tying up. It is a build up of lactic acid in the muscles which they find it very hard to get rid of. It causes cramping and discomfort. We feed her on Alpha-A Oil (as she doesn't hold the weight well) and high fibre cubes, which has helped alot. She has to be warmed up very slowly, and take a very long time to cool her off. I have had two instances where she has started tying up in the stable after i have worked her. Her back legs go stiff, and shes very reluctant to move them. When this starts to happen, we put a headcollar on her straight away and walk her out for at least 20 minutes. After this time, she has been fine. You just have to look for the signs. What you're doing with the salt in the feed is also really good. We add very small amount to my mares water too! Especially after hard work.
I hope this helps?
xx

I give them after she's worked. They restore the balance the electrolytes in the horses body. We were recommended this by a racehorse trainer who has had alot of experience with this.
