I had a chat with a feed-line yesterday and they said that excess protein does not cause tying up but that excess carbs in cereals does. Any thoughts?

umm, so you have a horse on box rest that has tied up?
i would have it on soaked hay and nothing else at all, or just add a low-cal balancer if absolutely necessary. no way would i be feeding any cereals at all - if the horse is getting no exercise, and it is summer so s/he doesn't need any energy to keep warm, then a basic subsistence diet would surely be much safer?

Tieing up used to be called 'Monday Morning Desiese'. Horses worked hard all week and were fed cerials. On Sunday, they had the day off in their stalls. If they were fed cerials on their day off they tied up, so come Monday Morning they were in a very sorry state. It can result in the horse being PTS if they go down and can't get up.

If the horse is on box rest it needs nothing but adlib hay (trickle feeding to keep its gut going, and its mind ticking over) and a light balancer.

The starch in cerials literaly poisons and kills the muscle cells if the horse is not doing anything.

If your horse has tied up, you might want to give it something like NAF DE-TYE, Global Herbs do one too.

Once the horse has tied up, it is sensetised to it, so keep a close eye out for it in future. It can happen after strenuous exercise even if you pay enough attention to warming up and cooling odwn... keep those electrolites handy!
