tying up

My mare tied up once about 5 years ago after our YO tried to feed her up on "high carb / starch feed"

Since then we have fed her only Saracen Releve, with non molassed beet and forage and she hasn't tied up since.

thanks guys. right here goes....

as you know buff has been on off lame a few times. she went lame last week again and vet was suspicious that she may have tied up. vet came to see her for a check up this week ad was sound but was moving a bit bizarrely (we thought she was just being lazy). she came out of her stable very short that night so phoned vet who came following morning. she was very depressed and again moving a bit bizarrely we were suspicious of a virus due to the depression but the vet was also concerned regarding her previous liver disease, she also decided to check her muscle enzymes as this was on her mind the hwole way through.
got results back and everything was normal except her muscle enzymes were raised so we think its azoturia. she is on electrolytes and has been on on something calles tye guard. she is completley box rested this weekend then in hand walking next week and then vet wants to come out for me to work her then take another blood test to confirm and to check her electrolyte levels.

in a way this is great news for me as this could mean that the last few times she has been lame could be her tying up and nothing to do with the navicular!
also she had always been on electrolytes until she went lame on her hocks. this could be why we have never seen it?

My mare used to tie up a lot and no one knew why- she went to bristol and had muscle biospies, numerous blood and urine tests and still did it so i do know a little bit about it. The one thing that struck me in your post was that you're going to box rest her- obviously i don't know your horse and i am not a vet, but azoturia is also know as 'monday morning' disease- i think the origins of the name are hunting but i believe it was to do with horses being stood in on full rations after a full on say. My mare now lives out 24/7 and doesn't eat any grain or feed of that nature- she lives on hay, hi fi, alfa a and a general purpose supplement, a salt lick all the time (although she used to have it in food) she also has a supplement called NeutraX which is a sort of electrolyte- she gets this after hard work. Have a chat with your vet but it might be worth mentioning electrolytes, diet and lifestyle. Sorry this might not be much help- tying up is a very tricky condition and although this worked for my horse- i'm not saying it will for yours- but do have a chat with you vet.

yeah she is on electrolytes. vet wanted her rested for the weekend then starting to handwalk her i have cut her feeds down but she really only has chaff anyway

sometimes vets do box rest at first. Beacon had EPSM with one episode of being so close to tying up. I fed him a very high oil diet and it solved the problem visit

Fantastic site and DR Beth is very friendly and helpful. She even checked my horses biopsy for free

Oh and yes cutting out the electrolites may have triggered it as it may have been that by feeding them you were just keeping an attack at bay. However in the long run it is best too find out and really get to the bottom of it

Lots of water....try adding peppermint cordial to get her to drink more. I had a 15h1 with it a few years ago really scatty type I found the more I rode him and left him turned out lots of water, lots of exercise, sugar and cereal intolerance mix the better he was. If he was in, cold and hadn't drunk alot during the day I found he tied up......try Global Herbs or VitE, Selenium, Magnesium and mostly electrolyte as these will all be lacking vitamins which cause kidney/tying up problems. If she sweats alot try giving electrolytes in evening feed.
Hope this helps :-)
