My elderly Shih Tzu, Mogwai, aged 16 years and 4 months has not been well for a few days on top of his general decreptitude. So last night I finally decide that the time has probably come to have him PTS and so phone up the vet for an appointment to do the deed which is at 1230 today.

Guess what, he's quite bright and cheerful this morning, so far (touch wood) no diahorrea overnight or up to this point and cadging dog biscuits, which he hasn't been doing for the past few days.

Will still take him to the vet for a general check over, but somehow I think the chances of him coming home will me still alive have increased dramatically.

I feel there's now a good chance he will be with us for a bit longer yet!

Good news then

hopefully she will be ok

Aww what a lovely post to read. I'm very happy for you both.

It's so tricky being an old doggy owner - your mind leaps from one thing to another and they constantly keep us on our toes.

Thank you.

He's back home for now, on the basis that he's enjoying his food, still interested in people and totters around the garden having a good sniff. Vet felt that if he was still interested in food, people and walks then there was "quality of life" and therefore the inevitable could be put off for a bit longer. He's had a Vit B12 injection and has some antibiotics and something else to help with the diahorrea and I'm to worm him (the way he was yesterday, I felt worming him would finish him off)

His heart is good, so any hopes I had of him slipping away quietly at my feet one day are most unlikely to happen.

We had a similar situation with our little Lancashire Heeler. We twice actually made the journey to the vets and she bounced out of the car the other end with a new lease of life! She had so much wrong with her but was eating etc and our vets comment was to just take her home and enjoy her as long as she had a reasonable quality of life! Sadly we did have to finally make the decision in May last year but we had many extra happy months with her so I hope you have the same with your lad.
