Just came back from dinner- I had a raging arguement with my mum. she pays £86 a WEEK in winter livery.. and £36 per 30 minute private lesson! this is EXTAUTION! she pays out 22% of the houshold income on riding, ok i want to be able to ride and have my own horse, and i am very lucky to have both, but i dont feel that she is paying a fair price! she said if i wanted to move yards, i should pay for it myself... Being 15.. i cant afford this..

For the 80 odd quid we pay per week, we have to pay ON TOP £3 every time we want to use the "school" basicly a crap shack which has a V dusty surface! also, i injured my knee.. needed 7 stitches.. couldnt ride for a month... because of a stray wooden panel!

What should i say to her

Many Thanks

WHOAH! that is a rip off for the facilities you get, i can see why you're angry. get the rates of other livery yards with better facilities to open her eyes to how ridiculous that price is... not only is it a lot of money, the yard sounds shabby if it just ripped off your knee, you don't want that to happen to your horse and have to pay the vet bills as well as the livery...

I don't understand your anger??

Do you have another livery yard that you'd prefer to be at?
If your mum doesn't mind paying - what difference does it make to you?

Um, I'm a little unclear. Are you mad about how much you're (you and your mum, effectively) are paying for the keep of the horses? If so, here's what I'd advise. Ring around other local livery yards. Get a pen and some paper, jot down their prices for the same service you receive at your yard. Make sure they're a reasonable distance away and that you can have the same lessons, of the same quality there too. Then, once you've got actual facts and figures as ammo, go back to your mum and point out (but be reasonable about it - don't shout) how much you think you could save, and how this could then be spent on other horsey goodies, or whatever. Without some facts to back up your argument though, you probably don't stand much chance of making any real headway.

Yeah, looking for some in the area!

Well, she doesnt mind paying because there is "someone on site at all times" but there is with most yards in my area!. I think it makes a difference because it makes me upset to think she is putting so MUCH money into a yard with so little to offer! when she could be getting so much more!

Thanks

Stephen

Ah right - there are quite a few good yards up your way - I'm sure if you ring round you'll find something that will please both you ...and... your mum!

she could up the mortgage and buy a house with land for that amount.

I can understand your frustration though. Ditto what others say, ask her to at least go and LOOK at other yards... then let her think changing yards was her idea.
