Hello all

As you are all aware of the irritating problem of lice on your hoofed ones and after a good brush yourselves.. Is there anything other than a vet visit to give these pests the boot??

Powders don't even mention as personally I find they don't work at all in preventing and keeping the lice at bay.
I have bought Coopers Fly Repellant which is suppose to obviously repel and kill flys and all manner of, also it kills and repels for 3 months lice (or so it claims ) I'm waiting for it to arrive but would love to hear any reviews of it?? and any other really good products that won't cost an arm and leg off the vet???

Also am using Equimax worming tablets for the first time.. Has anyone used them before and what did you think of them????

Kym :D

I would definitely recommend Coopers. My lad got them a few months ago so I gave him a good spraying with it and then followed up again about 10 days later to kill any eggs. He was free a few days after the first treatment - you could see the little critters dying as it was sprayed on. I had to wash his rugs too which was the worst part - although I think a good spraying with Coopers would have done the job on them too.

Hey!

Deosect (I think that is what it is called) is very good at getting rid of lice - it smells pretty bad but works very quickly. I'm not sure if it is a POM-V or not, if not you could search on the internet to see if you can buy it cheaper online.

Urgh. I hate lice. They are such a pain in the bum to get rid of.

Coopers or Pour On are quite good but you might need to apply a few times before it kills them all. Dooney had lice and his were really persistant.

Plus people always recommend an Ivermectin wormer. I've never known it to be effective but every little helps, as Tesco says.

And all rugs and brushes need washing in as hot a temperature as they can take.

Good luck.

Mr Merryn had Lice the other week. He was compleatly infested :( I've never seen so many in my life and have no idea where they came from :(.
I know you said not to mention this but I got some powder. (Can't remember the make But can have a look tom.) It worked. The lice were falling off dead as I put the powder on and there has been no sign of them since :D I keep checking to make shore as can't quite believe the powder worked ;) :p :D :D

Hey,

have you spoken to your vets about it? My vet happily prescribed Barricade https://www.pfizeranimalhealth.com.au/products/369/barricade-s-cattle-dip-and-spray.aspx without seeing the horse and it worked great, you might need a 2nd dose but it really does work. It keeps them away too, and I found in the summer my two got alot less ticks than other horses in the same field, might have been coincidence but it was the same two years running. You only need a tiny wee bit, smells ming but 100% worth it, I'd not use anything else now.

Deosect is amazing stuff!!

When i bought my mare last year from the breeder she was riddled with them , i sprayed her on the first day and within minutes you could see them dropping off of her:eek:, i sprayed her againt the next day and then once a week for about 4 weeks after just to make sure i had got them all.

Defo recommend it :D

we always use "flypor" its a cattle pour on, which is not licenced for horses but the horse vets prescribe it none the less.

when bottled by the vet it is called "permethrin". some people use spot on, but it has been known to burn some horses, so i personally wouldnt.

i THINK you can get flypor from online wormer sites without having a holding number (for cattle)

its great stuff- 40 mls for an average sized horse poured from behind ears to top of the tail along the spine, and another dose in 2 weeks and all the blighters will be gone! ;)

I use Coopers Fly Repellant Plus. I haven't read anywhere where it says it lasts for 3 months though! It says that you should reapply after 14 days to catch any eggs which hatch after the 1st treatment. You can apply it more frequently, if you use it as a fly repellant you can reapply every other day. It is very effective and has treated feather mite better than anything else I've ever used, including vets' patent potions.
Just a word of caution, it contains citronella, which affects my sister very badly, sending her dizzy and extremely breathless. You are advised to do a test patch on the horse 24 hrs before covering the whole body.

Ok thanks guys glad to hear I'm not the only one who they sneak up on. You'll be grooming and enjoying your time with your animals for ages then the buggers will invade lol thanks for the responses and will be using the cooper stuff defo.

Any one got any advice on the Equimax tablets???

Hope everyone's winter hasn't been to harsh. Spring is near so lots of Trails to be ridden and lush sunny days

Have to say i doused my foal with powder, every day for 3 days, then gave up and clipped her (3" of coat was too much too hide in!) powdered again and not had a problem so far. Am hoping to bath her this weekend to wash all the powder out and give her a good scrub up!
Am convinced she got her from the evil dove/pidgeons that nested above her box, on closer inspection they had missing feathers- so watch out for those buggers!

I apply coopers during the summer months, every 4 days and inbetween apply my own homemade repellent. Find it works really well. My vet recommended I kept using it for suspected sweet itch in one of my boys as it contains permethrin.
