Hi,

My horse was diagnosed with grade 3/4 and 2/4 ulcers in February this year, which cleared up following 2 courses of GastroGard and he was put on a vet own brand supplement to try and keep them at bay, along with a calmer (Equine America Super So Kalm) as initially thought to be stress based.

Roll on to about 3 weeks ago and they're back, he's on another course of GG, however I need to find something that prevents them coming back

When they first occurred we assumed it was due to limited turn out due to flooded fields, however he is currently out 24/7. He is a natural worrier hence the calmer (although not fizzy to ride etc) and hasn't appeared to be overly stressed.

He was barefoot however due to becoming increasingly footy, he had shoes put back on about 2 weeks ago. One theory from vet is the pain from his feet being sore has caused him to worry/stress and they have returned

As well as starting the GG, he has also started Myoplast Pronutrin, however I am concerned about this as he is already a bit overweight and this is 20% sugar and designed to add condition

Can anyone suggest any supplements that will help prevent his ulcers returning again as next time it won't be on an insurance claim!

Also any tips on managing a fat ulcer prone horse as I seem to be in the minority!!

And another aside, he works well when he is happy, ie. at home, with company or jumping, but when he is out of his comfort zone ie. hacking alone (although normally 100% alone he doesn't relax as much as in company) he displays the symptoms he did before (napping, rearing, tension etc) up until 3 weeks ago he was hacking alone perfectly. Is this typical or am I looking at bad behaviour?! I have also had different opinions from vets regarding work, 2 have said keep in work, use his behaviour to gauge if the GG is working and to keep his weight down, 1 has said may be better to rest. I am inclined to keep him working, just avoid stressful situations, but again, just after opinions.
He did a 12m sponsored ride on Sunday with a field companion followed by towing me over some XC jumps, clearly happy and keen, yet yesterday had a pretty disastrous hack alone, napping/rearing and he tried to roll and ended up getting away from me! Jekyll and Hyde...

Thanks!

PS current diet is 1/2 scoop Dengie Healthy Hooves twice a day with his supplements and out 24/7 on fairly bare grazing with a haynet before ridden on vets advice

Hello Troggy...sorry to hear about the recurring ulcers and erratic behaviour. It might be worth taking a look at HorseSource Seabuckthorn (google it) as an alternative to GG. Jo at HorseSource is hugely knowledgeable and willing to share her experience and advice. Good luck.

I would suggest pure aloe gel to help heal and prevent ulcers re-occurring.
Also, maybe supply a quantity of well soaked hay for him when out on sparse grazing, to increase the amount that goes through him, without giving him too many calories.

I had one horse who had recurring ulcers despite £1000's of pounds worth of gastroguard they just got worse .
She had some other serious issue the ulcers where secondary it's a long story but she ended up PTS I hope you get on better finding a way forward .

I use equine science products, this time last year i nearly had her PTS, since using there products my horse has made a full recovery and we have never looked back!!!! its 12 months now we compete most weekends and no naughty behaviour, no pain and no colicing total different animal!!! and i have one happy horse and im one very happy owner too!!!!! xxxxxx

Hi OP, I have been through very similar...my very good doer diagnosed in March with grade 3 pyloric ulcers which cleared after 2 months gg. He put a Frightening amount of weight on the ad lib hay the vet recommended and at the time I couldn't work it off hi as he was on restricted excercise due to a S I problem. He is now back in full work( Although his fitness still needs building), he has soaked hay when in through the day and out at night on moderate grazing. He has 2 very small feeds of fast fibre and hifi molasses free with a scoop of ulcer calm in each. I also add yeasacc. So far ulcers do not seem to have recurred, he is losing a bit of weight and seems happy in himself but I guess I won't know for sure if this is all working until we hit winter again, which is when the ulcers showed up last time.

Going through the links and advice on here I have the following list:
Seabuckthorn
Aloe vera
Succeed
Equine Science (their calmer may also help)
Ulcer calm
RiteTrac came up on a linked thread - any experiences?
Slippery elm?

If people have any advice on the above I would be very greatful

The pronutrin does sound ideal and gets good reviews but the conditioning and high sugar content worry me (not to mention the cost.....)

I am using ulcer calm, had it for a month, small scoop in each feed. So far so good but think winter will be the test for it when the grazing runs down. My horse wouldn't eat the pronutrin...it does smell quite strong and is very expensive. I am interested in trying sea buckthorn though. It sounds good.

You need to think of the following basics - healing any ulcers, lining the gut, lowering the acidity in the gut, keeping some contents in the stomach, especially at times of activity, and improving the gut flora. There are lots of ways of doing each element, just find what works for you.

I've just put a post on about my horses ulcers and the fact she's just been scoped clear. At the moment she's on Pronutrin (all the time the insurance will pay) but when they stop, I'll change to either Feedmark UlcerCalm which seems to have changed its name recently to GastricComfort
http://www.feedmark.com/index.php?page=product&product=Gastric Comfort

or Egusin, which also has good reviews
http://forageplus.co.uk/the-egusin-concept/

The ingredient you are looking for is Lecithin. This is the key ingredient in Pronutrin and the reason it works.
