Hi All,
I have read alot of the threads on here RE ulcers and various supplements but still can't decide which one to put my ex racer on.
I'm just about to start gradually weaning him off GG but want something to help prevent ulcers coming back. The GG combined with Equishure has completely changed him from a very aggressive agitated horse that you couldnt even touch some days to a happy sweet relaxed horse and I really don't want the old behaviour to return. I am debating between trying Abler and keeping him on the maintenance dose or looking for a supplement more easily accessible. I've narrowed it down to Protexin Acid Ease and Gastro Plus as these seem to be the most commonly used. I thought i read somewhere that Protexin contained Alfalfa (which he can't have) but I cant find where I read this now! I'll probably leave him on the Equishure as this seems to solve his hind gut issues and right hind stiffness but not sure what to use for the stomach! I know it's trial and error but just wanted people's experience with any of the above. His feed is all ulcer friendly - TB Museli and their TB Base mix and a bucket of Grass-tastic and Grass pellets in the field and ad lib hay when stabled which all seem to be working well and he is now starting to put on weight. He is turned out for 6/7 hours a day (he doesn't like to stay out any longer). I think the cause of the Ulcers was from his time in racing (only out of training last year) and a few yard moves once out of training. He's not a stressy horse and doesnt wind suck/crib etc.
Anyone tried either of the above or have any other suggestions?
TIA

The only one I would recommend is Forageplus Egusin Hind and Fore Gut, brill stuff.

I presume you are on the facebook ulcer page, lots of recommendations on there :)

I had my boy on acid ease but have since swapped to gut balancer by same brand as it is cheaper and didn't want to continuously reduce acid when it wasn't necessary. Plus I only go once a day so it was having to be soaked over night in his breakfast which makes it less effective.

I had equishure for my boy when he had the ulcers and did contemplate leaving him on a maintenance dose but a trip to the horspital and January are taking its toll on my bank balance! I don't think you would need to feed equishure if you bought gastroplus as it is for both fore and hind gut so you may save money that way, acid ease is for stomach only (and does contain alfalfa meal). Gastroplus would be next on my list if i change if that helps! I think it is trial and error, my horse never showed ulcer symptoms at all bar a bit of poor performance and he was scoped with grade 4 bleeding so if you have a horse with obvious symptoms at least you will be able to tell which one is working :)

This has alfalfa in it as well. Have a look at Pro-Equine Ulsa Soothe, aloe, slippery elm and sea buckthorn amongst other ingredients. I have used it on my horse and it helped enormously with the grumpiness! I got a second batch and he wouldn't eat it. So he has been off it all summer and just ordered another bottle to try again. Lots of them have alfalfa in which I try to avoid as it's a bit like rocket fuel for some!
