Ulcer supplements

A course of Gastro-guard from your vet? (very very expensive though!) or good old fashioned limestone flour usually works well!!

Well the vet wants us to use over the counter stuff first and see if that works and if it doesn't he says we can have the prescribed stuff.

Will have a look of those mentioned, thanks. Any other ideas?

Coligone works well, well not absolutely sure Cappy has ulcers but he definitely has stomach issues and it works really well with him, stops his windsucking and keeps him from getting grumpy when touched on his tummy. Their website is very good and explains everything.

I am nothing to do with Bradshaw's I just really believe that their product does what it says it will, which many horse supplements don't. So please don't think I am advertising. :)

Will be watching this post with interest, also suspect ulcers in my boy (vet coming in three weeks!!) I have put him on Pink powder for now as was recommended it at feed store, do you think this will help? (know i need vet and prob scope but this is just to help in the meantime)

I've been recommended bradshaws numerous times now, thank you FDC sounds like a good product. We're hoping his weight will be more manageable now. :)

blackhorse37- pink powder will help. :)

Gosh, never mind just worked out prices and I think we'll go for powder.

Personally I only use the liquid when he colics. It works incredibly fast, he colicked ( gaseous) not long ago, he had his Coligone liquid and half an hour later he was after his bucket! ( he didn't get it) It is amazing stuff.

Neither are cheap, liquid or powder but why waste money on cheaper ones that don't work? We tried a herbal supplement and it did absolutely nothing, Coligone works so it is worth the money IMHO.

Sorry for more questions, is it worth buying the 5L one or will it go off?
It would last 50 days (roughly) would it go off by then?

I used the liquid initially and then after a couple of months moved on to the powder, we then "topped up" with liquid on competition days. Brilliant stuff, stopped the squitty bottom at comps and the weight piled on - rather too well in the end! Echo the comments about speaking to Kate - she advised me about what to use and we found we didn't need the full recommneded dose.

I use Ulser guard by Equine America. It comes as wee pellets. I actually think he is looking a bit better eventhough we only started it last month.

But does the powder still work?

We don't mind spending money on him but if the powder works it would make sense to buy it. :)

Works perfectly for me. And is cheaper than the liquid. It works quickly, the only problem is that it took us a little while to get our lad to eat it , he is very fussy. I emailed them and they gave me loads of tips; they have been very helpful when I have contacted them.He is now perfectly happy to eat it. I was given advice by them that the liquid was generally used as an emergency or top up, but I do know that many use the liquid all the time.

Thanks everyone will definitely give her a ring tomorrow to discuss options.
Andy is also a very fussy eater but since being put on apple chaff we can just about get him to eat anything so hopefully won't be a huge issue. :)

I syringed the liquid but he loved it and went mad for the powder - its really minty :) A friends mare is on it now and she is really fussy but she will happily eat it and likes the liquid as well.

A teaspoon of Soda bicarb in his feed at night is the only thing that will work for mine. Very cheap and effective!! My vet says forget fancy powders as they don't work.

Neither of mine would eat the coligone... neither would a friends horse or my instructors.... and tbh it does smell very strong.

I went for Ulcer Gaurd in the end - American Equine or something or other - little pellets that look like tiny pony nuts - seamed to do the trick and you can get it from shops rather than have to buy over the internet. I had loads of scam stuff come after i used the paypal system - 1st and last time i will every buy anything that way.

Maybe you could phone and ask them for a sample? wish i had done that now

Hi

I have a horse who suffered from ulcers last year. He was treated with Gastrogard and dietary changes and have had no problems. However he is also prone to laminits so have to be careful how much feed, grass etc he has. Have had to cut his feed down a bit as he is having some grass but I am worried about the ulcers re-occuring. Have read some great reports about Coligone and U-gard. Which is better? Does anyone know how much U-gard has to be fed and how long a tub lasts?

Thanks
