Ulcer treatment getting worse?

Anyone elses horse got worse during ulcer treatment? On 2.5 weeks and ridden behaviour has deteriorated, doesn't even want me to get on and really resents any leg applied, very unhappy much worse than before! Back has been x rayed and ovaries scanned. Thanks ?

I wouldn't ride while a horse us on ulcer treatment it is an incredibly painful condition, give the horse complete rest so they can heal properly and give the medication the best chance.

Absolutely! I am surprised that your vet didn't tell you to rest the horse during treatment

Someone was asking almost the same thing yesterday on a different thread, and they said vet has told them to ride which I was quite shocked about tbh.

It totally depends what type/grade ulcers your horse has, and what treatment they are on.

When my horse was treated for ulcers she definitely got worse about 2 weeks into the treatment. Turns out the UlsaGold (omaprezole) can affect the delicate balance of the hind gut, and that was causing pain. The vet gave me some sucralfate to support the hind gut, and that together with the UlsaGold did the trick. It did take a good 6-8 weeks for her to return to normal, and I didn't ride her for about a month, if I remember correctly.

If I were you, I would stop riding, give them a chance to heal, and speak with your vet if you are concerned.

Thanks for this. She's already on sulcrafate because of where the ulcers are I think. I think I'll speak to the vet ?

I can't believe vets advise to ride I just think complete rest must be better ulcers are known for causing such pain discomfort crazy!

Having had a suspected ulcer myself, if someone had tried to make me go for a run I would have punched them. It’s a miserable painful condition. I think it took about 4 weeks for me as a human to feel ok. For my horse he had about 12 weeks of field rest if I remember rightly. The last 4 I may have brought him into light work. Definitely rest until symptoms disappear and/or they scope clear.

I was told to ride but given the teeth were coming at me with intent whenever I approached her tummy (along with hooves if the saddle was with me!) I decided to take the hint. We did low level ground work and tbh I think it helped the relationship.

My mum gets ulcers and they cripple her during a flare up.

I can imagine how bad it is it just goes to show you how tolerant horses are really, I actually don't work my horses if they are on antibiotics I think the rest helps the healing process.

My vet (gastro specialist) just advised a few days off then OK to carry on ridden work (providing horse was fed or given hay beforehand)

I know a lot of vets advise that but doesn't mean it's right not many vets own or ride horses, I would like to think I would be a better judge on when I should or shouldn't ride my horse, ulcers are painful and I personally wouldn't want to ride a horse that had them or when they were receiving treatment for them.

My boys on treatment for ulcers and I've been told not to ride but continue with groundwork in walk only. Once ulcers are healed vet then wants to perform a ridden assessment to check there's nothing untoward going on when ridden as he was sound as a pound on palpation and lameness work up from the ground
