I would appreciate any advice on this very difficult situation.
My livery purchased a horse in Sept 2012, when it was vetted the vet found a 'small rub' under the top of the dock as if a crupper had caused a wound there, he noted it on the vet form, the girl went ahead and bought the horse (I would have waited for it to heal but she was adamant on getting the animal regardless). Hence as its on the vet certificate its excluded under insurance.
The wound never healed, the vet checked it and said these wounds can take a long time, slowly with various topical treatments its got larger (5cm diameter) swabs showed bacteria present and its been treated with anti biotic topical and oral, no change has occurred and its classed as an ulcer. Meanwhile the horse became eratic to ride (could have been tail pain related) the owner has been diagnosed with cancer and stopped riding anyway. The vets are stumped, they have a skin expert say she would supply manuka honey infused bandages and see how it goes as part of a clinical trial but its all vague as to prognosis. The whole situation is a jightmare as she has a horse uninsured for treatment, requiring long term nursing (not easy due to it being hind end) and she has stage 4 cancer herself.
The vets have even suggested tail amputation.
The horse is not fit for purpose on two accounts, the wound it arrived with never healed and then it cannot be ridden probably due to the wound causing some pain? She bought the horse with the wound so I don't think she has come back with the dealer.
Does anyone have any experience of wounds which took months to heal and any treatments which were effective?
