Hi,

Brief history on my horse;

Jan 2014 - diagnosed with grade 3 ulcers, required 2 x months of GastroGard and then 1 month weaning off
July 2014 - after his ridden behaviour started deteriorating, went to vets to get to bottom of issues, found a bone chip in his off fore coffin joint and arthritis in both coffin joints. Had operation under GA and both joints medicated. Has course of GG as preventative measure while on box rest
Oct 2014 - started light work, walked for 6 weeks
Early Nov 2014 - Have inkling that ulcers have returned, try GstroPlus
Mid Nov 2014 - after a few days of trot work, ridden behaviour worsens, rearing etc. Also develops a rash on his offside. He is very stressed on the ground. Back to vets, grade 2 ulcers. Due to insurance running out, vet recommended (she is expert in ulcer field) a course of Pronutrin as this has been proven to clear up grade 1-2 ulcers at the front of the stomach where his were
Mid Dec 2014 - Behaviour much improved, start to build up work again, over Xmas pick up the trot work, first day ok, second day refused to trot without fight, tried to lunge but not happy on left rein. Repeat on 3rd day.
31st Dec 2014 - back to vets, 2/10 lame on near fore, vet very disappointed and surprised that he's lame, both joints medicated again. Rash still present despite washing in medicated shampoo, spraying with anti fungal spray, cleaning rugs and changing feed/hay. He is also now on GastroCare to neutralise his stomach acid

Can there be any possible underlying cause that is causing my horse to not cope with anything other than walk work? Could the arthritis be causing the ulcers? What else could cause his rash? Aside from these issues, he looks healthy, he holds his weight a bit too well in fact!

Also what are people's experiences of coffin joint medications? How long will they work for?

He's 7 and TB x Cob if that's of any use

Could he have hind gut ulcers too? My mare has just been diagnosed using the succeed test and she had ridden issues where she was bunny hopping in canter and very spooky!

The vet didn't seem to think he had hind gut ulcers as he scoped to show stomach ulcers and does respond to treatment but they come back, however, it had crossed my mind about hind gut ones, what is the succeed test? I am willing to try it!

Where about on his offside is the rash?
There are some immune mediated/auto immune diseases that can cause arthritis/skin problems/ulcers.

It's between his stifle and the girth area (sort of middle of tummy area) goes under his tummy and halfway up his side. His clip is growing out however so it may be in more areas but lost under fur. He needs sedating to clip so reluctant to do again. my gut feeling, along with others I know, is there is something underlying causing these issues, do you have any further info?

Steroids can cause rashes, you can probably check the contraindications for the joint injections on the net. Your vet should be able to check if you can't. I also believe in humans some types of arthritis can cause rashes, not sure about horses.

Hi Troggy, what sort of rash does your horse have? Is the rash sensitive? Does he have any oedema anywhere, including grass type glands? Has he had any blood tests? Has he got any marks or swellings in his mouth? Does he seem depressed/lethargic? Sorry for so many questions, your horse sounds similar to mine but mine has other symptoms too.

The rash is large ish lumps under the skin, no heads or scabs etc to any of the lumps and he is sensitive on that side due to ulcers so hard to tell if rash or not. He had blood tests a year ago when ulcers first suspected, other than slightly raised liver enzymes all was ok. He has been quieter in himself but has never been a live wire as such! Not noticed any mouth issues or glands but will examine him tonight.
Does this help? Thanks

Mine has all the same symptoms but has enlarged gums too and is just not himself. My vets are being fantastic and do think everything is linked, haven't narrowed it down yet but we are getting there. We are doing more tests next week, pm me if you'd like me to let you know how we get on.

Hi sorry to jump in on this thread but I have been having a nightmare with my horse being not quite right for 18mths and reading this is ringing a few bells for me. I initially felt the cause of him being not quite right was poor farriery & foot balance but after taking him barefoot 18mths ago and that being blamed by vet for lethargy due to being footsore (he was footsore as I couldn't work him because he was lethargic & mechanically lame!) I finally convinced my vet to bone scan which showed heat in hocks (xrays weren't clearly obvious) & fetlocks but nowhere else so assumed spavin and both hocks injected in June/July. He has always been on a high fibre no sugar feed with hay rather than haylage, I don't believe he has ever has laminitis - not enough for me to notice in any case, but I changed his feed in Sept thinking a better quality feed might perk him up and put him on a course of redcell as wondered if he was a bit low after all the drugs etc with his treatment. He then came out in a rash like hives that covered all of him except his legs, it went and didn't reoccur since I put him back on his old feed but he is still very lethargic. I am quite worried as he has always been absolutely full of it and it is not like him at all to be so boring! He is eating well and seems happy enough but I can barely get him in to trot so just don't ask as he would offer it in a breath if he could. Vet coming to do blood tests next week but I don't really know where to ask him to start, I am worrying it could be anything from a virus to ulcers to liver damage!! Any info about arthrisis/lethargy rashes would be gratefully received so I can discuss the option with my vet. I can't see him having a lifestyle that could lead to cushings but the lethargy is really bothering me - help!

How old is he? I will pm you.

Could he have hind gut ulcers too? My mare has just been diagnosed using the succeed test and she had ridden issues where she was bunny hopping in canter and very spooky!
The succeed test is very cheap (around £25) and tests poo for stomach and hind gut ulcers. My mare who is very whizzy was getting tired easily and was having problems with being very tense when ridden. Often when they have stomach ulcers, they have hind gut ulcers too. Try Googling it!

Mines being tested next week, did your horse have any rashes or oedema? How did you treat it?

Hi Silverfire - Thank you for replying, any info gratefully received as my vets are good but have not been particularly receptive or quick to pick up on his issues, hence my need to be very clear with them about the problems he is experiencing. Ryan is 15. He had KS as a year 6yr old and has been sound and happy for 8yrs since his operation, so I am gutted after so much hard work to see him struggling over the last year or so as he is a wonderful person. I have owned him from a 4yr old and he has always had a wonderful zest for life - bless him but his zest has gone! I am very concerned about his future, I don't understand what has gone so wrong, it seems to be one thing after another which is very odd for a horse that has been so straightforward to own. My vets like to use diagnostics rather than their eyes so whatever I ask entails a huge bill!

Actually thinking back, our pony gets hives every year in the Spring so possibly related to the ulcers. I think our poor pony has had ulcers for the last four and a half years that we have owned her. She is a very good doer and stuffs her face as quickly as she can so I have never been able to feed her ad lib before. Her new "ulcer" regime is a scoop of molasses free hifi with 25ml of hemp oil (good for lining hind gut and for inflammation) in am, net of hay in field as not much grass. In pm, she has scoop of chaff, fast fibre, pro balance mins and vits, salt and then succeed digestive supplement as top dressing, one net of hay/ barley straw, trickle net of hay, high fibre block to nibble on and then bucket of hay/ oat straw chop which she sometimes eats. The key is trying to make sure, the gut is never empty. She has definitely slowed her eating down and does have hay/ straw left in am. After six weeks, she is definitely improving. I'm riding her six times a week including some fast work on gallops, longer hacks and just about to start jumping her again to try and stop the weight gain on her increased rations. The succeed supplement is around £85 a month but definitely seems to be helping. Luckily I'm covered on my insurance for next year but think I will probably always use it during winter when she is in at night.

Hi Ali - all of this is so interesting I really think I may be starting to get some ideas about what is wrong with my horse. I have been reading up on hemp oil and sounds a very god idea for my boy. Do you mind my asking where you get yours, how much & what sort of dosage. Have never come across before, but found article that implies it is really good for arthritis as well as the gut, so as my vet thinks my horse has a spavin it could prove very helpful for him.

I feed micronised linseed which is much better than hemp oil. Linseed is high in Omega3 and low Omega6, whereas Hempseed is high Omega6 low Omega3. Omega3's reduce inflammation. Omega6's can cause inflammation.
Have a look at the different oils and the Omegas they contain in this link http://www.equinechronicle.com/myth-a-shiny-horse-is-a-healthy-horse/

Thank you Silverfire, also didn't know that - mine is already fed charnwood linseed along with benevit multivit, I also swear by Marigold, Rosehip & celery seed powder for joints and inflammation. He only gets a small amount of linseed perhaps I need to up the amount, I found an interesting couple of articles on the Hemp oil:

http://www.hemp-ingredients.com/PDF/SUMMARY_of_Equine_Report_for_Hemp.pdf http://www.equinewellnessmagazine.com/articles/hemp-oil-for-horses/

would be interested to hear anyone's thoughts - can you tell I am desperate to find a solution?????

Interesting links- thanks for posting them. I bet its more expensive than micronised linseed being an oil too but it does sound good.

I buy hemp oil off amazon as I have prime membership so postage is free. I pay £15.99 and it is from Pegasus so not too bad although added to £85 per month for succeed and £30 for high fibre blocks her ulcers are costing me a fortune!

Ouch! But think I know the one you mean - not cheap but sounds a good idea. Very curious about hemp v linseed or both!!!
