I bought a horse in November that cribs, she has never worn a collar for it but when I bought her I put a collar on(it didn't seem to distress her). However she has on several occasions showed mild signs of colic that seemed to go off, the last 2 have been worse and I have had the vet. The vet said that he thinks it might be an ulcer and although it seems back to front to leave the collar off. Any advice.....??

Thanks

Meant also to say that i dont think the ulcers are caused by windsucking/cribbing but that many horses find relief by doing this. There have been a few posts about it recently - will try and find them for you.

allowing her to crib (ie leaving the collar off) may well reduce her stress and allow her to relieve her own discomfort. Try probiotics and altering feed to reduce symptoms..increase fibre in the shape of speedibeet or similar, allow ad lib hay and avoid mixes..works for my boy who can be seen to crib immediately after meals or when he runs out of hay occasionally and never has any colic type symptoms (he doesn't wear a collar)

i was also going to suggest coligone. my mare was having colic like symptons, thrashing around the floor, moaning and groaning, gave her a 50ml dose and within half hour she was back to herself again. We have put it down to gastric ulcers, although not had vet to do full on investigation yet.

Have you asked the vet to do a peritoneal tap (takes fluid from the gut cavity under the belly)? This will hopefully tell you if an ulcer has perforated which can be nasty and could lead to peritonitis.

Dont want to worry you unnecessarily, it happened to my mare 9 years ago (she is fine now).

I would take your horse off any cerials immediately and just feed fibre and lots of hay/haylage. If weight is a problem, you can feed up to 1/2 pint of veg/soya oil a day.

Hope this helps. If you need any more info, pm me x
