Hello Everyone,
I took my 8 week old labrador puppy to the vets last night to discover she has an umbilical hernia. She told me not to worry, massage it every day and just keep checking I can pop the fat back in. I'm not particularly worried as I've done some research and it should sort itself out, but I wanted to know if anybody on here has experienced it and what happened?

Help much appreciated!!

I have had 2 bitches with umbilical hernias. One lived until she was nerly 12 and the hernia never bothered her. Remained about the size of a small apple (she was a GSD so not too huge). I have a 7 year old bitch who has a similar size hernia, again it has never bothered her, but she is going to be speyed in a couple of weeks and I think the vet is going to repair the hernia at the same time. I agree with your vet not to worry, have to admit I didn't massage my girls hernias, just checked them regularly to make sure could push them back in.

My basset had a hernia. The vet wasn't worried at all and Ijust kept pushing it back in.

However, he had bloat and had to have a big operation to sew part of his intesting to his stomach wall to prevent it from twisting again. So, they sorted the hernia out at the same time.

My grans new pup has one and vet said it's nothing to worry about and he would sort it out when she gets spayed

Hiya!
All three of my dogs have one and none of them have ever had a problem.
Although when my OH took our spaniel to the vet when she was a pup the vet said she didnt recommend breeding from her because of it?!
Hope this helps.

The collie I have had one, in fact the whole litter did. Some were worse than others - his was really small. We had it fixed when he was castrated. I also read somewhere that you shouldn't breed from a dog that has one, nor should you breed again if a litter has been affected.

Our black lab bitch had one which we had removed only because she was spayed at age 8 and the vet did it while she was open. It never bothered her and I loved squidging it so I miss it.

If I hadn't had the op I would never have had it removed.
