Umbilical hernias

We have seen a lovely bitch that has one, and I would like to know more about them. Can they be removed when the dog is spayed, can they cause further complications / problems ? Have you had a dog that has / had one? Thanks

My brothers cat had one if that helps! He had it removed, I think it was at the same time as neutering as to avoid an unnecessary double dose of GA. His didn't cause him any problems before or after removal.

May also not be of help but my mare had one as a foal - it caused her no future issues whatsoever.

Yep I have known LOTS of CKCS which have had umbilical hernias, not one of them has ever had a problem with one

I think some owners think they look unsightly, but definitely no health effects in CKCS from them for sure

TBH I havent ever known of any dog which has had one removed as far as I can remember

My lab has 1. He is 10 1/2 and has never had any problems

my bitch had one, we had it removed as she had to have a toe removed so did both at the same time, vet said from the start that it shouldnt cause problems and we had it out at 8 months (mainly due to toe coming off as well) but siad if she starts viontly throughing up or passing blood to rush her in straight away!

Our red setter had one and had no problems with it all. It wasn't a problem when she was spayed either.

LOL at your vet - personally if my dog started violently throwing up or passing blood I would be taking it to the vets anyway

Any dogs I have known with umbilical hernias have had them removed at nueturing and never had an issue

lol gazehound that is true! although i think she said it because i was asking questions on weather it would cause a problem or what the worse case senario would be and she said it shouldnt cause a problem but if she was terrible sick it could be the hernia twisting or something??? god knows it was yrs ago

My first pug had one. He lived till he was 13 which is fairly good for a pug. It never caused himm any problems and he won a first prize at Crufts!

Yes that makes sense, hernias can get strangulated cant they.. although I always was led to believe that inguinal hernias were much more of a problem than umbilical ones?

Thinking about it none of my greyhounds have had them, so it must be yet another thing that only those disease ridden sickly inbred CKCS have

Our spangle, Fern has one. She's homebred and vet said it would never cause a problem and only to have it removed if we intended to breed from her. We don't have any intention of doing so. She's a working dog and has never caused her any problem to date *touch wood*

small, fatty, reducible umbilical hernias are unlikely to cause a problem but are easily repaired at the same time as neutering. larger hernias could result in a strangulated gut so are more important to repair ASAP.
