unaffilated is showjumping, dressage and xc show where anyone can go and enter

affilated is either BD (dressage), BSJA (showjumping) and BE (eventing). you have to pay a membership for you and your horse and then you can do events. affilated is more expensieve than unaffilated. hope this helps a bit!

Affiliated basically means that it is governed by a larger organisation. Affiliated SJ comps are governed by the BSJA for example therefore they have to abide by all of their rules and are regulated by them. Unaffiliated compatitions are not regulated by anyone and make their own rules. In most affiliated competition you need to be a member of the larger organisiation to enter. You can buy day tickets though or enter some 'open' competitions.

And usually unaffiliated starts at very basic levels, eg walk trot dressage tests, 2' SJ or even smaller whereas affiliated stuff tends to be bigger/more competitive, although BSJA now starts at 70cm and you can do BD prelim, so they are widening the market a bit
