Posting for a friend who doesn't have an account.

She has had a horse for a few years who's eyes are very, very dark. They have a slight blue tinge over the pupil, in all lights. The horse has always had this, had vets out for routine checks and not one has picked it up so she just ignores it.

Horse doesn't seem bothered and is a happy all-rounder but shes got intrigued as to what it is, or if shed being silly!

So what do you think?

I've heard that cattle get a blue tinge to their eyes when they are copper deficient.

If the horse is dark coloured, does he have redish tinges to the mane?

Copper has a hand in melanin production - so a copper deficient horse may bleach in the sun and have redish tinges to a dark coat.

With a grey it would be impossible to tell.

Copper (and zinc) are routinely found lacking in UK grazing/forage.

I'm not suggesting that is the reason for the horse's eyes.....but just throwing it out there :D

Oberon (on my phone so can't quote) my horse has what looks a bit like hi-lights in his tail and ends of his mane, I just presumed he was a secret red head and someone else said its when it gets bleached in the sun, he's a very dark bay, could this be the copper deficiency you mentioned?

Perhaps. It's very common :).

My ginger went a very deep red colour after staring on balanced minerals (which included copper).

My mare has just been started on pro hoof which contains copper. She has red tinges at the tips of her mane. I was wondering if they would go once the new growth comes through. All our horses have a blueish tinge to their pupils when inside their stables. Vet checked one of them last week and said his eyes were fine.

Well you learn something new everyday! I like his hi-lights although the red streaks clash with his brown bridle.... But that's a whole different issue :) off I pop to find more supplements! Thank you
