to update anyone who's interested, the chestnut, or where it used to be, took a couple of days to scab over properly. It never bled, but it just sort of stayed gooey.
After a few days it just looked like an ordinary scab.
now (3 weeks later) it is actually turning into chestnut again! It is just stnading above hair level. I accidentally brushed it with the bodybrush this evening and got a look of complete disgust from him, but then he doesn't like being brushed much so it probably had more to do with that than the injury!
