This time last year, a few days before Polly’s first season of the year, she started suffering from colic-type symptoms. She was box walking, pawing the bed and even chucked herself on the ground a few times. She was also scraping her body along the wall. Her friendly behaviour remained, but on and off she seemed a little bit uncomfortable. Inbetween little episodes, she would happily eat and drink and behave as normal. She then came into season two days later and the symptoms stopped. The vet was obviously called and agreed it seemed to be linked to her season rather than anything else, so we sent her in for a scan to check for an ovarian tumour.
No tumour was detected, but her ovaries were big and full of follicles so they put her behaviour down to this and suggested I see how the next couple of cycles went and if it continued, we would try regumate. The next cycle, she showed much milder signs for just a day, and by the one after that, she didn’t have any symptoms at all. She came into season regularly all summer, and never showed these symptoms again.
Tonight, she has started again. She seems fine in herself-eating, drinking etc, but a couple of times, she did a bit of box walking and dug a bit of her bed up. I also caught her scraping herself up and down the wall. Anyway, I stayed with her for a while and she seemed fine, so it does appear to be the same thing as last year. Im convinced she will come into season in the next couple of days now. I’m going to ring the vet tomorrow, but I wonder if anyone else has a mare that suffers like this and what did you do?
