Well hats of to the local police - I am really shocked but please at how serious they took the events of today.

For the last few weeks we have been having a dog - lovelly though it may be - rampaging round the farm on a weekend morning - its has chased our chickens, hens, the old half blind cat, the knackered old lab and has frankly really made me *issed off - it frightened the life out of the horses I was turning out last Sunday, but lucky for me and the pooch, we all remained unscathed and un-harmed.

Today however, the crys from the fowl let me know something was going on again, and as i was walking to get more horses to turn out - there the dog was - chasing the horses on the icy ground - it was minus 4 and by god was the noise loud - now when I say chasing i mean actually running at the underbellies of the horses and jumping up to bite them. Lord above knows how the herd remained un harmed - well as far as we know but they are yet to meet a dog again - but we managed somenhow to catch the mutt.

Low and behold up rocks the owner - and says I knew he would be here !!!!!!! - asks for dog back - I say no way - police are being called - this dog is a menace !

I won't bore you to tears with the details - but we have one lucky herd of horses - one very nice set of local police and one very told off dog owner !

I am honestly astounded that any dog owner would allow a dog off the lead for over a month when it runs off - and be bloody rude to folk when the dog has nearly killed some of its livestock.

Now I am not a dog hater - i love them, we have jack russels - and trust me they are proper "do as we want dogs" but they come to call, - well unless we have found a rabbit or a squirrel or someone is playing footie - but if we know that is a chance - you'll never guess where the dogs are - yep on the lead !

i dont love dongs i like them but thats it

i would have been fuming if someone had that attitude to their dog running amuck in my place. I would have called the dog warden.

my horse has kicked 2 dogs that came up behind her heals I WILL NEVER TELL MY HORSE OFF one dog did summer saults after she kicked it it was ok owner just put dog on lead i thought serves it right and the owner

A friend had one of her pet sheep killed and another 2 badly injured by a neighbours dogs last week. If she had access to a gun I suspect she would have shot them and she told the owners this at which point they became abusive and slammed the door in her face, so another neighbour (ex police) contacted the police. The officer who called round also had the door shut in his face so is following it up and will probably press charges, it is good to see the police taking this sort of thing seriously.
Glad in your case OP there was no damage and hope the owners are more responsible in future.

I honestly think if it had been one of my horses being attacked i would not have been quite so calm, but i was lucky it was horses that i am very attached too, but do not personally own. So this meant i was able to be relativly rational, but bloody hard - the police were wonderful - they really really were and hats off to them.

The dog - was also wonderful - the owner - well the dog should have had it on the lead, as the dog had more sense in its little paw than they did !

If hubby had been at home - it would have been shot - no questions, if this had been the first time dog had run riot on farm - we would have given the owner a chance - the fact that they started to get on their high horse with us, after having this occur for the past month - well that just about finished me off.

You have my sympathy, I'm still trying to catch one that comes onto our land to bark at the ponies from the adjacent public park (has to go through or over a chicken wire fence) called Daisy - whose owners can't catch it either and when eventually it goes back to the owner it's severely told off (no wonder it doesn't do recall!). Fortunately it hasn't so far actually bitten the ponies..it seems too frightened, probably because the NF isn't averse to kicking out at it.

I had the same a few weeks ago, 3 times the neighbours large breed dog was in the field worrying and chasing the horses, i spoke to the police and put electric tape up around the top of the fence raising it by about 6 inches at an extra cost of £100 to me. Ive told them that if its in their again i'll have the police prosecute the next time and if it still continues i will have their dog shot by the farmer.

I had a similar situation years ago, when the neighbour used to walk around the outside of my field and let his dogs in to chase the ponies. Henry got so stressed he threw himself to the floor. That occasion was the final straw so I ran over to the fence and asked him to get his dog on a lead. Same old story - abuse, swearing, threatened me, the lot. This was a guy in his late 50s/early 60s!

Sadly the police in Kent are not so obliging. I was passed from pillar to post between them and the dog warden. I hope the warden did call on him, but doubt anything serious was done. This was the same guy who left his gate open onto the bridleway and his dogs would lunge at horses, who would then gallop towards the busy road, less than 50 ft away. Actually stood on the bridleway once and tried to stop me riding up there. Complete fruitloop (oh and he lit fires on the bridleway, too).

I hate people who can't keep their dogs on leads, they're asking for trouble! I keep my lot on the outskirts of a small village with my top horse in the field on his own bordering the road. OH was in there shooting bunnies one morning when he noticed a JRT wandering arund the field towards my horse. OH immediately got the gun on him and would have put a bullet in it's head (OH is an amazing shot so would have blown it's face off) had it taken 5 more steps towards my horse. Thankfully the dog ran back towards the fairly busy road to it's owner who was jogging along without a care in the world about where their dog was.

I think the police have had to up the anti on this one, since that poor farmer was killed by his milkers when they stampeeded due to a dog chasing them, when he was bringing them in for milking like he had so many times in the past. Add to that the "walkers" who still loose the dogs off in a field full of livestock and then its the poor farmer, dog that usually end up suffering the consequences.

Haf two of the "local" akitas kill 3 of my goats in july.took 4hrs and 7 police vehicles before they were eventually sorted.Apparently sheep had been killed the previous week.
Owner decided to plead not guilty eventually so I have to go to court AGAIN!
No apology, dogs still in custody and I'm 3 goats short

Please dont single it out to one breed, akitas get bad enough press as it is. Its ******** owners who shouldnt have them, they are faithful, loyal loving dogs who can be very protective. I know ive got 2. If you want a dog you can let off the lead in the park and ignore or not have to watch an akita's not for you.
My horses were hounded by a great dane and collie.
Others i know were hounded by jrt and bearded collie
What im trying to say is all dogs are capable of worrying livestock and attacking people, its not breed specific
