Soak over night in cold water, boil up and them simmer for about 6-8 hours, well thats how long I used to cook it for until it goes like a jelly,

Hi, yes it takes AGES to cook & if you don't watch it it boils over at the first opportunity & is a bl**dy nightmare to clean up & get off of the hob - especially awkward with an electric hob as heat takes so long to reduce when you turn it down. You want to aim for a VERY gentle simmer once it has been brought to the boil - if I remeber right it takes about 4-5 hours to cook (once simmering VERY slowly I used to go to bed & come down hours later !!).

i have never simmered mine all day, i leave it overnight to soak and then bring it to the boil the next day, rapid boiling it for about 10 mins and then leave it to cool, done it this way for 20years and never had a prob.

I agree, when me and Mandy were talking about it the other day she said it goes like jelly!

slighty off topic, but both simple systems and dengie do linseed in large bags, pure linseed and ready to feed, i think ss is around £47 for a 25kg sack and dengie are around £23 for 20kg.

how long does it last if i cook 600g (7 handfuls ish) and how much should i feed at a time

I wouldn't do that; I was always told to throw waste linseed away as it can go rancid so I presume you shouldn't cook more than you can use at any one time.

I know people have done it in the microwave too but not sure how long/power etc for that. If you have a Rayburn then you could soak it overnight and put in the slow oven after boiling it hard for 5 minutes (watch it like a hawk, it sticks like glue!)

A small handful, say half a cupful, would be plenty to start with then don't go more than a cupful at a time afterwards.
TBH, linseed oil will give you the same results without the hassle but it would be silly to throw it away and waste it!

Unless you have a good extractor in your kitchen I would throw it away and not even bother. It stinks when its cooking.

I gave up boiling it years ago and just buy the SS stuff now.
