I've just clipped my boy out for the first time, just legs and saddle area left on. He is now wearing an Amigo H/W T/O 350g and a Rhino H/W Stable rug 370g and is as snug as a bug in a rug

However, I'm aware that is it relatively mild ATM and I would guess that he will need a bit more especially if it goes down to -10 like it did last winter.

Now I know it hard to guess how much he will feel the cold but I would like to be a bit prepared instead of panicing when the cold weather comes. I would put him as 'average' - ie doesn't sweat in his rugs and doesn't stand there dithering either.

Would you guess that a fleece would be sufficient to top up his rug? Or a an under rug? Or get both?

My parents are asking me what I want for Christmas and I thought a Thermatex or similar would be useful

Would a Thermatex be equivalent to a fleece or an under rug for warmth?

Your thoughts / recommendations gratefully received

A thermatex will be better than a fleece, and probably as good as an under rug. They're fantastic multi-purpose rugs and I'm very jealous you're getting one

I have a snood and its amazing!!! We got soaked in the school the other night and he dried out so quickly he also wore it over night once and was lovely and warm so is a greta investment!

Ours have duvets under their stable rugs which keep them nice and toasty and are a lot cheaper then under rugs!!

Thermatex are great multi-purpose rugs but when I had them years ago I found they were rubbish as under-rugs as the fabric stretched and they pulled down on the horses withers. Now this was absolutely yonks ago so they may well changed and improved the design. I now have a lansdown equivalent which is fantastic but there are also other cheaper versions on the market.

My friend's thermatex does this

I thought it was a one-off.
Thinking about it I've only ever used them on their own.

Get a Coolex over a thermatex. Would use that underneath another rug, but wouldnt use a thermatex. Good quality fleeces are the best underrugs though IMHO.

Thermatex are fantastic rugs and I wouldn't be without mine. I have tried the cheaper alternatives but do find the real thing is a better quality rug than most. The only downside is they do stretch which is why I always buy a size smaller than I would normally get for my horses. They are good as under rugs, especially if your horse hasn't completely dried off, but on a daily basis I prefer to use a light weight quilt such as the Weatherbeeta Jasper Combo as my underrug (with a neck to keep them really toastie) and then a heavy weight quilt or two on top depending how chilly it gets

I would advise against a thermatex as an under rug, they stretch, put pressure on the withers and the roko buckle is crap at holding. Fantastic on their own but so many horses are twitchy around their withers because of them. RS horse had it dig in through her chest like a gore movie after wearing it underneath.
They cost enough, why cant they have buckles!! GRrr

My first thermatex started as a 5'6" and ended up as a 6'9". The second one however doesn't seem to have stretched too much. Maybe gone up two sizes! Thermatex do say to buy one size smaller than you need though.

well thermatexs are suppost to be the best thing since sliced bread, so i got one for my birthday, and i hate to spoil the party but i dont really like it.
it looks pretty, but i dont think it performs that well, and i wish that i got a MT coolex tbh. i just wanted something heavier than a fleece to put on my clipped boy, and so thought that a thermatex was the obvious answer, but now im thinking that maybe layering two fleeces, or the coolex would have been a better and cheaper alternative.

Honestly wouldnt touch a thermatex now after getting a coolex. Used to love Thermatexes, but they arent as useful or well fitting as the coolexes IMHO.

Thanks for replies

It sounds like I do need one of each - under rug/ fleece/ thermatex or similar

The Jasper combo does look good and combined with the fleece that I already have I would hope to be enough on the coldest of nights.

Of course if I am using my fleece all the time he will need a new travel/cooler rug = Thermatex

Now all I need is to decide if to buy a Thermatex or a Coolex - I like both and as he would be a pony size in the Thermatex, not much difference in price...

Decisions, decisions

Nope only one weight, it doesnt feel as thick as a thermatex but that is because it is smaller squares. I brought the correct size and was perfect for Goddy, fits beautifully, doesnt slip and is a "proper" rug with proper buckles and surcingles. AM getting the neck in the new year, but havent needed it as yet. No stretching wither. Thermatexes are fine for travelling and after baths, but I wouldnt use one in the stable as they slip and undo.

Really cannot rate the COolex highly enough, and everyone who has seen it has commented on it

Sounds really good and I have seen one in the flesh - they are very nice - friend nearly bought one at YHL but didn't because they didn't have the colour she wanted.

Coolex is in the lead at the moment
