Just thinking of ways to keep the neddy warm while living out this winter, and wondered if you could use under rugs underneath turnout rugs?

he'll be wearing a combo turnout so it's unlikely it will get dirty really (but then again...!)
would it be a really silly idea? i could use another turnout rug, but an under rug would be "softer" if you know what i mean...

anyway, anyone done this before?

I used an under rug last year, to be honest they are good, but I think he got too hot. For extra warmth this year I am going to try a fleece.

I use an under rug for really cold snaps, make sure that it does not poke out from beneath the turnout rug at the back. Ive never had a problem using them.

stable rugs can soak up the rain when used under turn outs,so i think it is better to just use a heavier rug.

I use under rugs for the yearlings as i am not buying them lots of different rugs as they grow too quickly. They have a lightweight turnout (no fill), a medium weight combo, a fleece and a medium weight stable rug, between them all i can find the perfect combination, it worked fine last winter when they were baby babies!

I used a 150gm amigo under my mediumweight when it was really really cold last year. but wouldnt want to all the time as would rub his shoulders. Not worth buying a hw for as was only a few days but did the job when I needed it too.

Why not just use an appropriately weighted turnout rug?

I will be, but he's a sensitive TB, and i'm only thinking of using for the cold really cold patches and not for the whole winter.

I use an thermal fleece rug under my HW when really cold or snowing to keep mine warm. wokrs really well, rugs stay clean and not an issue. A fleece cooler allows them to sweat/breath if they get too hot and keeps warm if cold. go for it.

As long as the horse is wearing an appropriatley weighted rug, has access to good shelter and ad lib haylage then I'm sure he'll be fine. It's not the cold that gets them, but the wet and the wind. And at times like that - if he's that sensative - I'd have him in.

Yup, I do.

Sometimes I use a stable rug underneath, other times I use a turnout underneath - as all of them have cotton or silky linings I can't see the difference. Aleast a turnout underneath is waterproof should the top rug slip or blow up in the wind.

I use rug liners. They are made to fit under turnout rugs and can easily turn a mediumweight rug into a heavyweight.
They have fittings/velcro which means they fit without moving unlike using a normal stable rug underneath.

I have used a fleece and a under rug at different times when it got cold and they both did the trick in keeping my old boy warm. He did not like heavy rugs so I used a middle weight turnout.

In really really grotty weather, one of mine wears his rambo wug plus heavyweight with a lightweight over the top. It works well to keep him warm and also keeps the heavy rug dry.

fine when it's dry, but if wet and they lie down, the wet seeps into the under rug and makes them all soggy so i tend to use 2 turnout rugs if i need to layer.
