My poor little Westie, Toto has been diagnosed with an undescended testicle:eek::rolleyes: He is five in September, dont know how it went unnoticed so long. Since there is a risk of it becoming cancerous, the undescended one will have to be taken out. The vet would like to neuter him, but I would rather leave his normal one well alone. He is a lovely dog, very gentle nature, funny and extremely active. I dont want to risk changing his personality and it is unnecessary since he will not be bred, so he will not pass on this "defect" to anyone.

Has anyone had a dog with an undescended testicle and just had that one removed, leaving the rest of him intact? Would really hate to neuter him:(

I've only experience of puppies having undescended testicles - rather shocked that the vets hadn't picked up on it before. To be honest neutering doesn't change the temperament at all/that much. Leaving one testicle will leave the chances of him having testicular cancer (really common in dogs especially older dogs!) very high so if he were mine i would have him neutered. If he were to develop testicular cancer he would have to be anaesthetised (if he develops it when he's older he will not cope with the anaesthetic as well as he will now) to have the tumour (and no doubt his testicle) removed. There is also the risk that the cancer might not be picked up quickly (the vets don't seem very thorough but maybe that's wrong of me to assume) and could spread to other organs.

I'd get his pockets picked!

My collie had a retained testicle. One had dropped normally but the second stayed up.I was going to have him done anyway when he was old enough (at 18 months) but the vet advised to get it out as soon as possible so he was done at 14 months. He had three incisions as it was abit hard to locate as it was quite small. It hasn't changed my dog at all (well he is a Collie) he is still as mental as before. If there was any chance of cancer i too would whip them both off.

I really would get them both removed, at his age it is unlikely to change his character . As you say amazing it went unnoticed for so long, I always used to check before a pup left me at 8 weeks and if both weren't down then advised the new owners to check regularly or ask their vet to.

Oh dear:( He will not approve of this! Is there definately still a risk of cancer with the normal one left there? How so? No idea how it was left undiagnosed so long. Vet was careless obviously, and I must not have been examining his equipment too closely:p

here is the little man, he is the one in the middle, the only chap I have, would be gutted if something happened to him I could have prevented so will of course neuter him if it is the best thing for his health. Vet only mentioned risk of cancer with the undescended one and pushed for neutering incase he passed along to any offspring but my girls are all neutered and he cant leave the garden (electric collars;))

Sweep had this - vet said to wait until he was a year before doing anything in case it resolved itself - it didn't do he was castrated (was going to be anyway it was just a couple of months later). The risk if cancer is high and it won't change his personality at all.
