You normally have to book, vist the websites of ones you want to see, they will have all info. Most have more in sept/august time.

Open Days for most (if not all) Uni Open Days will now be over. Some will have 'visit' days in Septmber - Cardiff University for example.

The best thing to do is go to your careers office and aske them to help you out with regards to upcomming events (they should have this information).

You could also contact the universities you are interested in direct and ask them if or when you can visit.

You can go and visit a uni any weekday, go to the receptions ask for a self tour guide, you'll get a bit of paper that guides you round the uni and gives you helpful tips, I did this last summer.

We've been going to open days recently for my son who's in year 12. Like AmyMay says, most are now over, however most unis will have another round at the beginning of next term - go on the websites now and book your place as they can get full. You can check out what courses/unis you're interested on by visiting the UCAS website.

If you can't make the open day, you can phone up and book an individual visit, but open days are best I think as everything is laid out before you and you can get the maximum information from the limited time you are there.

I noticed quite a lot of students already had their offers for the autumn term - some students wait until this stage before visiting the unis. Although this means fewer visits, it's a risky strategy as I've found you can get a completely different impression of a place when you visit it from how it's represented in the prospectus. Also, visiting beforehand helps you find out what they are looking for in prospective candidates so you can put a really good personal statement together, and get the relevant qualifications and experience.

Not at all Universities (in fact very few). And certainly many departments do not welcome 'cold callers' as it were.

It's always best to go on an organised visit day.

I'm pretty sure Bath and Bristol are next week sometime. A friend was whinging that their son wanted to go and see both and that they are on the same day.

Out of interest what unis are you interested in? I know that most of my friends did a couple in june and then loads in september.

Bristol has one tomorrow, and another in september
RVC was a few weeks ago, but I think has another
Cambridge next thurs, and either the day before or after.
Notts this Sat

I am sure 75% still have ones to come, I've looked at the dates for most.

i didnt go to any open days before september of year 13 and i saw all the ones i wanted 2 as many run them in sept/oct/nov.... good luck with it!!!
i went to reading, royal ag cirencester and harper adams which were all very interesting and set out well, it is really good to go to an open day as you get a feel for the place also students usually help out with them so u can ask them questions about their courses and life at the uni (also important bits such as price per pint!!!!!!)

good luck with everything, i've just finished my a-levels and know how hard they are i hope you succeed in your studies and get to go where u want to

The best advice which I can offer you is to contact the institutions which you are interested in attending and asking them to arrange something for you (either a guide for the day or at the very least a self-guide pack).

Remember that you are a potential client of theirs who will be, via either tuition fees and/or the funding council, worth a LOT of money to them.

It is worth remebering that buying a university course is like anying else you may be investing a lot of money into (e.g. house, car, etc) -customer service is key - if it is to much trouble to "sell" themselves to you then what will they be like as a student! Many institutions struggle with (or are still trying to deny) this basic fact that they are businesses in a marketplace selling a product!

happy hunting!

I agree with that advice. My daughter was at a Higher Education Fair recently and when she said she would be in Ireland in the summer on holiday they said phone up and say you would like to see round the University on a day that suits you.

sodding open days! i'm an A level teacher and i have no students- it seems they are all going to 500 open days this week!! when i was at school we were only allowed to go to 2! i would say visit the places you are REALLY interested in- if you have missed the open day then ring the admissions tutor and ask if you could visit privately. many will accomodate. i know that durham and bristol did when i was applying.

I don't. You 'buy' courses over the interent. You 'continue' your education and invest in your future by going to university.

A student is not a customer - they are a student.

Universities can not cater for the individual visitor - except ocassionally. Imagine 22,000 individual visits through out the year - how will you manage that one?

Open Days and Visit Days are structured to give potential students the best possible experience, by pooling all resources, departments and student volunteers over the day. Enabling the visitor to gain the best overall picture of what studying and living at that university will be like.

but i do think its worth a call if you have missed the organised open day. i put durham down as my second choice precisely because they were so accomodating- i went down in my holidays and met with a tutor for a couple of hours.... in terms of student life you can pick up a lot from the websites and stuff- people don't tell the truth on open mornings! (she says preparing her presentation for year 10 open morning tomorrow!!)

Hmm. I think when you're paying that much you are a customer. Certainly overseas students, bringing in so much money to the universities, have consumer power. Don't see why home students, as fees spiral ever upwards, won't start to have the same demands and influence. Perhaps universities will have to adjust?

I missed an open day when I was looking round institutions. Upon contacting the university in question, I was told to turn up on a particular day for a tour, to find that nobody was in the least bit interested in helping me look round, or even pointing me in the right direction. That's not a problem if they tell you that's how it's going to be before you go, but I'd driven a fair way. It was a waste of time. So I'd definitely agree that organised events and open days are the only way to go!

Having said that, I turned up at another open day where several key people simply didn't bother to turn up to speak to us. If that happens, though, at least you know where you won't be going!
