Ok, so i just want your views/stories on university whilst having horses.
Im going to uni in sep 2010, hoping to do biology/physiotherapy, and i will be staying at home.
did you find it hard to fit both horses and uni in?
I have lots of friends at the yard, that will be more than happy to help a day or so, and i could have my horse on part loan, but selling is really the last option!
did you manage it? was there enough time? mum seems to think im going to want to go out all the time and horses are holding me back..
what do you think?
xx

I kept two whilst at uni and lived away and had a social life. I got myself into a routine, found a friend that would help out over busy times i.e. deadlines exams etc and loved the clearing the mind a good gallop gave when I had been studying for too long and my head was mince. If they are an important part of your life then I would say do what you can to keep them on. What about a share or lease?

i took mine to uni (over 150 miles away) i graduated in 2006. I managed, wouldn't have wanted to sell her and theres no way i'd have found anyone made enough to buy her.

If you're staying at home i would have thought you would find it a bit easier then being away. If you could find a sharer or part loan that might be a good idea though, just give you a bit more time for your uni work and of course the socialising!

yeah, im glad both of you managed cos i really dont know what i'd do without them, i know it would only be 3 years, but i'd miss out on so much in 3 years!
plus, im really good friends with the yard owner and her daughter, plus another 6 people down there

so everyone would always help.
yey, im glad now

I'm in my third year at vet school and have my horse with me at uni - take him home in holidays. He's eventing and BSJA/BD this year.
Last year horses were at home - 1hr30 away on the train from central london and I still managed to get home enough to keep and 2 horses fit to event. And I still had friends and a social life!
So yeah, if you love them enough, you will make the time!

You could do it, lots of us been there and survived to tell the tale.
I did loan my mare out for my final year to both save money and concentrate on that last year, i am sure i could have managed if i did it differently in that final year

Part loan could work beautifully for you, just make sure there are solid ground rules

I graduate in a month's time and have managed to commute to Uni every day and have my horse on DIY livery at home

It meant spending 4/5 hours travelling a day - I live in Wiltshire and commuted by train to Cardiff - but I was determined to make it work, and it did! I have obviously been helped by the fact that I have lived at home - most days dinner was cooked for me, and Mum occasionally would get Ellie in for me at night when I had a late one - but tbh I have done nearly everything myself for the whole three years.

I have had no social life at Uni, but that was my choice. It can work - as long as you want it to!

Definately possible. Im at uni in London, come home to Leeds every weekend/other weelend to compete. People help me out at the yard. Manage to have a social/uni life, get work done and compete the horse. Works fine!

I had more free time at Uni than I ever did at school or in working life! The beauty of Uni is you can fit your study around the rest of your life - I fitted mine around working full time hours, and horses, and still had time for a social life as well - the vast majority of my course was reading and research, which I could do as easily at 10pm as I could at 10am, so I did!

If you are living at home and your parents are willing to pay for the livery and your uni fees then I think you will be fine.

My parents sold my pony when I went to uni - they did not want to look after it whilst I was away nor did they want to pay for me to have it at livery near me - it was free to keep it at home.

I had to get a student loan out to cover my expenses whilst I was at uni and it barely covered it and there was no way I could have afforded a horse without taking on a full time job as well as studying.

I choose to go to uni rather than go to work so I should not expect my parents to pay for this or my pony once I was of working age.

I then did not get another pony for nearly 20 years as I had to pay off my student debt and then save up to buy pony and make sure I had enough savings to support us both though the good times and bad.

I lived at uni and bought my horse in my first year, I have managed to fit having him a job and a social life in as well as coming home every few weeks. It is very possibly to do easily.

still have mine and im at uni still manage to hunt twice a week during the season, in first year i had a spell of thinking 'what i was missing' as my friends all stayed at weekends so decided to have a couple of weekends at uni.. soooo boring, nobody does anything, so there isnt much to miss out on when your horsing around! I wouldnr ave it any other way! i find it odd when ads say 'selling as owner going to uni'

Definately possible. Going into my final year and had my horse all my time. I couldn't have coped without her. It's such a stress relief - as someone else said there is nothing to stop you doing the horse in the early evening and studying later on. At my uni at least the library is actually open 8am-2am.
