Just trying to work out weight of unladen Ford Cargo 810 horsebox for 2-3 horses with a basic living. Can't seem to find the info anywhere on the documents, although I know the maximum weight is 7.49 tonnes.

I guess it is definitely no more than 6 tonnes unladen, but if anyone has any idea that would be great, want to travel 2 16h - 16.1h and one 15.1h horse on sunday, and don't want to break the law!

Thanks

Newer Ford Cargos are said to have a payload of 3.5T, so unless yours has extraordinarily heavy fittings in the living, i imagine you will be fine with the two horses you describe.

To be certain you might need to run it over a weighbridge empty - often if you don't need the ticket, just the readout, there is no charge.

Sorry, didn't write that very well, there will be three horses in total - 2 x 16h, and 1x 15.1 (15.1h horse is thoroughbred and very fit and skinny!)

Things like cookers, fridges, generators etc wieigh a lot, but if it's basic living, without these, it will make a big difference.

Is it coachbuilt, stick sided metal panels, or wooden body?

I find wieght tape are more than 100 kilos out, under estimating - on our cobs, but may be more accurate on lighter build horses.

Depends what it's made of. Glasonite is heavier. I had a cargo 811 3 horsewith living which weighed over 6 ton. new builds now are made of lighter materials and the lightest seem to be around 5.7ton.
Bear in mind that the horses will weigh around 450 to 600 kilo each. Then there are passengers and all of the gear to take into account.

Its an aluminium body (that much I know!), has a fridge and a basic cooker, but nothing fancy so doesn't weigh too much - will have to try and find a weightbridge today maybe.. Maybe should starve the horses too

I am pretty sure the box is capable, but just don't want to risk a blow out or other complications if its overloaded - we have taken three slightly smaller ones before - but only on a very short journey.

Thanks for all your help!

Mother_hen, did you mean to write 3.5T payload? I think one of the biggest payloads you will get on a 7.5T is 2.5T and they are rare. The norm is between 1.5T and 2T depending on the build.
