The plan for Barbaro after triple crowning in the US was to run (and destroy) the Epsom Derby. I heard a bit about his planned 4 year old campaign - I wish he had not got hurt, as he would have been the most famous race horse EVER.
 
Or maybe not? Who even knows if he would have won the Triple Crown? He only won one leg!

Its purely speculation about his future career - just because a horse wins one good race doesn't make him the best racehorse ever.
 
Mmm, that's a very arrogant post GTs. Who knows whether Barbaro would be able to "destroy" any of the other Derby runners.

As Sprial said, he only won one race of the triple crown so I don't think there is any evidence that he was the best racehorse ever. After all a decent racehorse needs 4 good legs not just the adoration of a load of americans!

It amazes me that someone who usually posts fairly rational (if not a touch patronising) posts on most horse topics has seen the story of Barbaro through such rose-tinted glasses.

Speaking to his exercise rider last week - he said he was a sure bet. He was unbeated, the jockey did not even use his whip in the KY Derby and won by 6.5 lengths, had never really been pushed let a lone shown all he had got, and he went better over a mile and a half therefore what most horses struggle on was his advantage.

Last year was the first year ever that if you triple crowned you were not an all time earnings winner - making a 4 year old campaign more likely (especially when your owners like travelling) - the worst kept secret was that Barbaro was twice the horse on the grass than he was on the dirt, so he would have travelled to some of the big races around the world, which would have made him the most attractive breeding stallion.

Really don't see how that could have been possible.....the last leg of the triple crown is run in June I think,as is the Epsom Derby...and he couldn't have entered the E.Derby as a four year old as only 3yr olds can be entered.

I guess he could quite easily have gone to Royal Ascot as a four year old...can't for the life of me remember the name of the big mile and a half race though...sure someone'll know though

There are so many what if's in the story of Barbaro,must be heartbreaking for those involved wondering what might have been....
 
the donkey derby .....and my fat old cob has a better chanch of winning that than barbaro ......perhaps you should try the three legged race pmsl
 
not to mention that racing on a dirt track in the states is a tad bit different to racing on the Epsom course which some of the top jockeys say that it's one of the toughest courses to ride

Thought the derby was for 3yr olds anyway?

Now that is very assuming that he would have been the greatest horse ever. As mentioned he only won the Kentucky Derby there is no telling whether he would have won the others. I think there have been greater robberies of the triple crown title such as War Emblem, he was so close to achieving the triple crown if only he hadnt stumbled out of the gate. He won the Kentucky Derby in 2002 with odd of 21-1 with a jockey that hadnt ridden him before! He then went on to win the Preakness stake. Unfotunatly he stumbled out of the gate at the Belmont but still managed to take the lead at the final bend but due to his bad start ran out of steam and was beaten. If it hadnt of been for that stumble he would have won and I feel that is far closer that Barbaro got.

the 4 yr old (all age) classic is the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes at Ascot on a Saturday (july ?)

It is the first big race that pits the 3yr old classic winners against the 4 yr old and 5 and upwards horses

terribly sad news about Barbaro

It's things like this that ought to make the TB breeders reconsider their ban on AI and Frozen Semen

To mention a "three legged race" in this context is totally inappropriate

......however as I expect you watch Big Bruvver and think Jade Goodey is a heroine ...........what more can you expect from your 'opinion'

and yes - that was deliberately rude to give you a taste of your own 'opinion'

Not something I would normally do but mentioning a 3 legged race in connection with Barbaro was tactless, unkind, rude, unfeeling, selfish and totally insensitive
(if you can understand or even spell any of the above words without the benefit of an on-line spell checker).

However as I said in my first post, I think its downright silly, and very arrogant to assume a colt who won a single big race would be able to beat the best over here without even trying.
 
i have not been rude or nasty to anyone ......just telling it as it is......your all condoning barbaro being used as a guinie pig in the the hope that you can put other horses through the same pain..BARBARIC.....get real .....its all done for money...and not for the horse...if he had survived what kind of life would he have had he was a flight animal no way could you have taken away his will to run ...... LIKE I SAID RIP POOR HORSE NO MORE PAIN.......
