I rode my mare tonight to discover she was really short in canter on her left lead. I was doing circles and she kept breaking into trot and feeling realy wooden. In trot she had felt fine.

I then trotted her on the lunge on the drive to see if that would show lameness up more than the school but she looked fine. The vet is coming tomorrow but has any one else experinced unsoundness just highlighted by canter? Im very puzzled and worried!!

Yes, I had this once... but it'd also show if the horse was lunged on a very tight circle to the left (was short in right canter). That was a forelimb lameness thought and although I've *touches wood* never experienced it, I understand some hind lamenesses show up more in canter than they do in trot.

Hope the vet finds something that's easily fixed

Yes, my vet was saying this to his students when he was assessing my mare just last week (lunging on a soft surface); particularly how she struggled with the transition. (she is lame behind)

Hope your horse is ok. x

We have had something similar which turned out to be muscle tightness in the back. It is responding to riding long and low, lungeing in a pessoa and sessions with an osteopath. Ask your vet to check what the problem is.

thanks everyone, vet said she was sound but stiff through the back. I have been recommended a physio to help so she should be fine in a couple of weeks
