As Ethel's now barefoot and shes about to run out of Alfa A Oil I want to put her on an unmollassed, low/no alfalfa chaff to help her feet as much as possible. I have asked in the feed shop and they told me they don't have a chaff that has no mollases or alfalfa. The chaff they recommended was Unmollassed Hi-Fi Lite as it apparently has the lowest amount of alfalfa in it. I just wanted to know what other people recommended and whether or not I should go for the Unmollassed Hi-Fi Lite.

Thank you :)

Luciestalks are pure alfalfa aren't they?
I've struggled to find a chaff with NO alfalfa in it. But Hi-Fi Molasses Free is very low sugar/starch. :)

I feed unmollased hifi. It's pretty good.

Else you could perhaps feed readigrass or graze on which is ordinary grass cut and dried?

Do you need to feed a chaff? Fast Fibre is very low sugar and alfalfa free, I feed it to my three ponies who are barefoot, I use it to mix their linseed and magnesium in

My boys have hifi molasses free and seem to like it as it contains pellets and doesn't seem quite as much like sawdust like a lot of similar feeds seem like. Have used all sorts in the past from hifi, alfalfa a, chaff to happy hoof and the Dengie equivalent too.
Only downside is the cost as I think it is a little expensive for what it is but then again I never feed the recommended amount of it as my lads are good doers.

Ossichaff. They do a sugar free one which is chopped oat straw and chopped hay. My ponies love it.

Now this I would recommend too as I have used this brand of chaff and found that it was nice stuff and reasonable for the size of bags compared to other brands like Mollichop etc

Hi fi mollases free good stuff

Hi Fi is still quite significantly part alfalfa.

My horse is terribly sensitive to alfalfa (it completely blew his brains when I upped the quantity of his Alfa A Mol Free to 3 scoops a day) I changed him back to the Hi Fi Mol free, which showed a huge improvement, but there was a marked improvement again when I changed to an alfalfa free chaff. I now use Molichaff Calmer, which seems to be working for him, but it is lightly molassed, so probably no use to the OP.

D&H Just Grass and Simple Systems Just Grass are good for those in work as they are 13% protein and are nothing but dried grass.

However, if you want something that is low cal and again 100% grass, then Simple Systems do Ruff Stuff which is again only dried grass but more stalky and lower in feed value. I use Just Grass for my two as I don't feed anything other than fibre to give them energy, but have also used Ruff Stuff for the old clydie we had who could put on a bit too much weight.

There are some hay chaffs out there but ones that have nothing in them but grass are more difficult to find I have found.

readi grass or graze-on!

I use Ready Grass Gold as this is low sugar and it's grass and soft straw. I too eliminated alfalfa and also Speedibeet which seems to have solved my TB geldings chronic low grade lami, along with a move to a high ground yard (lower quality grass).

Has anyone used Saracen Slim Chaff? Would be interested in what you think. I'm ordering some next feed order to go with Saracen Shape-Up but haven't come across anyone using it yet. I've only got experience of the Dengie alfalfa mixes up to now.

I feed honeychop oat chaff so my fatty feels like she's getting a feed. A scoop of this with her formula for feet pellets mixed through dampened down with a handful of sloppy fast fiber and she thinks shes getting a massive meal! Stops her being jealous of her slimmer friends proper dinner. It is just chopped straw though so a fussy horse might not eat it...?
