Unnecessary feeding

So a couple days ago the owner of the horse I part loan said once this lot of feed runs out she'll be switching to a higher energy complete feed to it as she figures we cant carry on feeding 'nothing' throughout winter.

She has an Arab who she has owned for 10 years and gets a huge feed and is a poor doer, and from this I think has developed a tendency to mollycoddle. New horse is a 4yo TB who arrived in the Spring in a poor condition from ireland but seems to be a good doer, we fed linseed, calm and condition and a chaff/grass nut base. Since horsey got up to weight in record time he has just been fed the chaff as a token feed, now he is getting a bit of linseed with this. He is living out 24/7 with rugs and we still have a good amount of grass.

He looks great, has not lost any weight yet from the summer and his shape is improving all the time with work. He is energetic but not loopy, and though he would I am sure still be controllable he definitely doesn't need any more energy.

I dont understand why she is wanting to change his feed when he is doing so well on what he has and we found a great combination of stuff to get him fatter without any fizz (which is something I have always struggled with in the past). I had figured if he started to lose weight we would just add calm and condition again and only change it again if needs be.

This is predominantly a rant but as a part loaner do I have any right to put my opinion forward?? I know its her decision and this new feed might not fizz him at all... but ... well I guess I am just an 'if it aint broke' kinda gal!

Eek I know how that feels! I think there are ways to put your point across fairly subtly, maybe next time she mentions it say 'so shall we give just a small amount to start with to see how it affects his energy levels?' You know just as a suggestion!*Does she ride as well? I'm sure she'll work it out soon enough if it heats him up!

If she's only adding a small amount of linseed its unlikely to fizz him, its not heating. And if he's now an ideal weight, its better to maintain that with small amounts of linseed now the grass quality is going, than wait till he's lost weight & then try to put it back on. I'd choose linseed over calm & condition for extra calories without fizz everytime.

good idea, I will say it like that - and yes she does ride so she'll notice a difference. She has bulk bought a whole winter feeding system which I feel isnt a great idea as you should try him out on something before you commit to a 6 month supply

Littlelegs - I think you missed the point (sorry!) linseed is fine with him, its actually done wonders and I'm hailing it as a miracle feed to all who will listen :p the calm and condition worked well for him as well with no fizzing effect. Its the "complete" feed she is switching to that has me worried!
