As a YM i have to put up with some very weird & wonderful requests from my liveries, all of which i try my hardest to incorperate into my daily routine. I have serveral of my own Horses, my children ride too. My time is precious but I never charge extra for all the "Can you do this today & can you do that" So it comes as quite a shock to find out my liveries have been bi*ching about me behind my back. Now i know that this is not unusual and it comes with the job but when you find out that a certain livery is blatantly making stuff up and painting you in a very bad light it makes it that bit harder to smile on her arrival. Its such a shame.
So i would just like to say for all of us big bad YM we are'nt all bad & dont believe everything you read on here as there is always two sides of the story.

Know the feeling! Thats why I dont have more than one livery now!!

The best I had was the one who regularly left messages in the tackroom saying "Ive gone away for the week, can you do my horse!!!" We are talking DIY!!! I had no problem if i was given plenty of warning but if i go away I have everything sorted out 3 months beforehand. Its where I got the saying DIY livery you end up doing it yourself!! And then there was the one who moved house and used a spare stable to store her furniture!!! Didnt ask!!! After a year i got a skip in!!

I have a lovely livery now!!

No, sorry, all YO are possessed by devils and behave randomly...you just can't tell that this is happening to you.
I think it is perfectly reasonable for your livery to expect you to do her horse...at short notice...you should consider it an honour.
If you need further training in yard management, I'm more than willing to let you practice by doing my three...poo picking etc? The offer's there.

Know exactly how you feel which is why we closed our yard down and it is now complete bliss with only our horses on site

we must own the only livery yard were there are no probs what so ever and all our liveries are great they all help each other and if we need to then we help out,we have 10 liveries atm its great we always stay down the yard for hours talking to them and we have bbqs etc its just really nice and everyone is really happy !!
not all us yo are horrid random weirdos lol lol

We had a thread about gripes from YO's a while ago, I was surprised at the number of replies it got. Made for interesting reading. In your case I'd leave a message with every contact number you have for this client telling her that you will be happy to care for her horse, the full rates will be............

I have a livery story for you too.........chap buys horse for girlfriend, she comes to stroke it and pet it for a few months, then I don't see them (or any money) for over three months, when I phone to remind them of their mounting bill, and horse, I am told "We are not interested anymore" then have the phone slammed down on me. Ummmmmm? Yes but?

I am still trying to get hold of them.

That's why I don't have liveries anymore! Just have my own horses and will never have liveries again. It is always the ones that you do the most for who end up slagging you off as well. There is a livery yard next door and the poor YM can frequently be found in my yard hiding from some of her liveries and I can't say I blame her!

If only they were all nice YM's and liveries wouldn't it make life much nicer?
We've just left a yard where YO/YM tried charging for services not undertaken, and has now gone round saying we knicked their fence when we left! What use we would have with rusted barbed wire and rotten wooden posts is beyond me
smirk.gif
we did however take all our own posts and tape that we had put up to stop horses getting to said barbed wire! We didn't give notice but paid for the full month when we were only actually there for 4 days so they certainly didn't lose out especially as they are not even a quarter full. Oh happy days............................

I can't say I've ever met a truly horrific YO / YM. I just think half of them must be slightly eccentric due to all the cra* they put up with. I wouldnt do it!!

I often feel Livery yard owners can't do right for doing wrong.

I don't think you could pay me enough to put up with some of the nutters in the horse world.

I often wonder when I read the complaints about YM's on here IF we are hearing the true story.

Although the same could be said about most subjects.

You nevre get the full picture until you have heard both sides. (Haven't we seen this happen several times over the years on here)?

You always get one don't you...
After all the years of having 15 DIy's I now only have one, who is no trouble whatsoever, she knows she can rely on us to do anything needed for her mare, and by the same token, she will muck in if she sees we are struggling.
My advice re the difficult one you have is simple, ask her outright what her gripes are and suggest she finds somewhere she likes better.
One rotten apple soon breeds trouble and her livery money isn't worth the hassle.
I have a whole fund of DIY livery stories and one day I will write a book and put them all in, one of my favourites is the stunning girl with the beautiful face, amazing body and brain the size of a pea.. She always tied her thug of a mare to the same tie ring, so when she found a long ladder with a chap at the top of it one day that didn't stop her. She simply tied through the ladder to the ring with the ,man still 15 feet above .. Funnily enough have the men went off her after that..

I must add we also had some fantastic liveries, who remain friends to this day despite moving from there 15 years ago. I reckon if your ex liveries send you a friendly card every Christmas you can't have been that bad a YO..especially as some stayed 10-12 years....

[/ QUOTE ] Sadly I've known a few 'psycho' YM/YOs. The good ones are worth their weight in gold (thankfully mine is in that group). Everyone is falible and there are bound to be times when they take decisions liveries don't like for the smooth running of the yard. The good ones deserve loyalty because it is a tough job.

The equine world is full of disfunctional people. If ever I am fortunate enough to have my own place, I doubt I'd have liveries!

One of my greatest friends is my old yard owner. We only met because I wanted to move my horse in to a livery yard.

I have to just say that I am in a wonderful yard. We all get on, with each other and with the owner. There have occasionally been one or two who don't fit in. Afraid they don't last long. There's a huge amount of give and take. Eg if I've helped muck out the full livery boxes, then I don't feel bad about asking YO to do my horse one day. But I recognise she has a business and I have a hobby. Think that's important.

I am afraid I have had one or two pretty difficult YOs. One that basically refused to engage in discussion about things with clients and did not staff fully leaving clients having to pick up the slack on full liveries. Another who charged me one rate for full livery then charged the next person less to get her in the door, despite the fact her horse ate twice as much as mine. I thought it was pretty unfair.
The worst of all was a full livery arrangement where the YO stole constantly from me - feed (I brought my own in), shampoo, supplements, gave my horse all the dregs of fowl dusty hay off the floor....anything to make MORE money from me. Disgusting.
I have been on a fantastic yard for just over 2 yrs. I can talk openly with the YO and discuss my horses requirements openly and honestly.
I think full livery must be easier to manage than DIY. Personally I can imagine that being really tough, with people all on different routines/regimes.

Having been a livery yard manager and a livery I can see the argument from both sides. SOME YM are the most unhelpful, moody and difficult to get hold of people even when you do want to give them their money while others are great and always about at the right moment. Likewise SOME liveries are badyly organised, messy and ungreatful but then other are perfect and fit in with your routine.
Livery_yard_manager - I wouldn't worry about a few comments taken out of context especially as no names were given so no one outside knows who the comments are directed at. All my liveries but two stabbed me in the back when my partner left me and I had to give up the yard, the two who didn't stab me in the back were full or schooling liveries, the ones generally considered to be the most demanding and they were so helpful and supportive. All my liveries had said they were happy before the event but very quick to get the knife out after everything I'd done for them.

Cheers chuck.

Henryhorn I could add a few chapters to that book of yours

I bend over backwards trying to please people and always end up being made to look like the "evil YO". I give up and am slowly whittling my yard down to just me and a couple of friends - the small amount of money I can earn is just not worth the headaches
smirk.gif

I feel really sorry for you guy's as you are only trying to make a little living for your self's and as ture as it is some people do take the p***!! I would get rid of the bitchy person and then the yard may settle down as people do tend to follow suit...(the leader so to say, and lets face it you don't need this at your place, as it's YOUR yard. I have lots of friends who are in liveries and all they seem to do is bitch or get bitched about, then they move yards and a few months down the line bitch about the new yard and want to go back to the old yard..

Snap!! Tarquin (above) was my YM and has been my best mate ever since!

Though I must say, as a livery, I do get annoyed by unprofessionalism

I am on a very good livery yard, where the YO, is brillant. Any poblems, she will bend over backwards to sort them out. There is no bitching on the yard, abd everybody gets on really well with each. When I moved to this yard, I felt like that I had brought Charlie home and told the YO that. This is the best move that I have made
