Is it just round here or is it everywhere?

At our small yard we all ride as much as possible although we are all busy working people. Yet, in 2 years I bet I could count on one hand all the other horses and riders I have met whilst riding. Yet there are horses and ponies everywhere. Fields full of them. They are there on a warm sunny Sunday afternoon for goodness sake! They can't all be retired!

Could be that they are out and about at other times and you have just never met up with them

The beauty of owning a horse is so long as it is physically and mentally healthy you don't have to do anything with them.

I like field ornaments. They make the countryside look nice

At my previous yard people rarely rode out and it wasn't that I just didn't see them. At my new yard everyone's out riding.

I guess some people are regular riders and others less so.

How do you know they are not ridden? Do you watch them all 24/7? Different people ride at different times and it may just be that you see them whenever they are not being ridden. I see plenty of horses that never appear to leave their fields, but I do know from other people that they are in fact ridden regularly.
I also agree, I like happy, healthy field ornaments

Not having a go but it does make me laugh how people get upset about what other people do with their horses!

I don't like horses not being ridden but at the end of the day it's none of my business - tho like a few of the people above said, maybe they're being ridden when you're not around....

I rode out at 10am this morning. However during the week it has to be fit around work, so I tend to school at home and ride between 6pm and 8pm (now yay!).

I don't hack that much and tend to spend more time training!

I used to ride my old horse and be untacked and turned out by 7.30am weekdays. Summer evenings it often wouldn't be until 9pm or after....

I think people on the yard I kept her at marvelled at her fitness/condition as a 'field ornament' lol as no one ever saw us out!

I agree with Bonzabean, they cheer up and add a dash of colour to an otherwise green countryside!!

Our problem is we just keep buying the darn things, started with one, now we got four to look after, too much time maintaining, not enough time riding!!

Anyone fancy being an unpaid groom in sunny dorset???

I would love to be able to have horses as just field ornaments but mine are with me so i can ride and compete, couldn't afford to have one sat there rotting so to speak but thats just me,i know lots of people that have them for pets which is lovely but i havn't got that option really.
I love my riding to much to let one of mine rot, fair enough if they are retired or have an injury but if it's capable i'd be riding it regularly. Everyone has their own oppinion on this subject so none of us are going to agree really.

Oh, I agree completely! They're generally bought to be ridden, and that's what most of us want, but they have to be cared for aswell don't they. Five acres and four horses equates to around 18,000 dollops per year alone, never mind the ragwort and other chores!!!

Good news is the summer's coming, longer, lighter evenings!!
