unruly mane!

Hi, any tips on getting my youngsters mane to lie on the offside!?? I have been trying for 2yrs now and it keeps falling back over to the nearside! aaaarrrgh. I've pulled it and generally pait it over 1xweek but the minute they come out it flicks back!!! incidentally his mother's mane falls to the nearside...is it hereditory?
is it accaeptable to let it lie to nearside...or does tradition still dictate offside?
any help would be appreciated.

I have admitted defeat with one of our horses manes. It lies on the wrong side neatly, I pull it on the offside and on the odd occasion I plait I plait on the correct side with no problem - it then stays on the correct side for a few days before reverting to the wrong side. I reckon it it is tidy and lies neatly I wouldn't worry too much about which side! But thats just my opinion for what it's worth!
 
I have a 16 year old who I have had since he was 3. His mane is crazy and I have come to the conclusion that I will leave it. I do as Sophiesmum does and pull it to the correct side and plait it to the correct side but other than that I leave him looking like 'whatamess' every day!! His doesn't even have to good grace to lie tidily on one side; he looks like he has been electricuted!!
I know how uncomfortable it is when my mum used to make my hair go where is shouldn't so that's my excuse!! When he is in a fly rug or neck rug I do tend to try lie it over to the correct side but he still looks like a crazy professor head at the top. I can't use Lycra rugs as he thinks it is an excuse to have a wild night and I come down in the morning to a blind folded horse!!
I keep it clean and short and it doesn't look TOO terrible

I had this problem with my cob when i let her hog grow out, I didnt want to plait it incase she rubbed etc. I used to brush mane through with a comb using a detangler spray then Iron it. You need to thoroughly wet mane through use a towel, i use a largish bath sheet folded in half lengthways, place towel over mane with just enough to hold at the top of the neck, with the rest of the towel hanging down on the nearside. Then holding both ends pull the towel slowly but firmly down the nearside, move along and repeat until you get to the withers, then respray and start again.
It sounds a faffe but it isnt and its hard to explain what I mean, it does work I do it at shows and it gives a lovely finish and if at a show use a gel spray for the last iron and the mane stays in place.

cheers folks, I will try the lycra hood but he is abit of a brute with rugs..2 shredded already!! I.m not too sure about the ironing tip tho....!!! he's 3yo and 17hh already...and v. boistrous...combine that with a hot device and I feel the ambulance will be on standby!
I may do the pulling and plaiting to correct side then leave well alone otherwise.
