I've just moved to the South Shrops country and I've been told that the United and Tanatside are close by. Just wondering what the packs are like to hunt with? i.e is it big jumping country and what type of horse goes well?

Can't fill you in on the Tanatside - but the United doesn't have a lot of jumping! It does have a lot of hill country - and not too much road work. Can't tell you what it will be like next season as the Mastership and hunt staff who have been in place for about 10 years are finishing this season and there will be a new Master/Amateur Huntsman (William Wakefield.) Time will tell.

Hello!

I am a full subscriber with the Tanatside and we are a lovely bunch! We are very much a farmers pack and very 'un-posh' but adhere to all the normal ettiquette of hunting. We have a mixture of hill and flat country and do jump at most meets, although tends to be hunt jumps rather than gates and hedges.

The fields are relatively small. We hunt on a tues and sat, with tues ideal for hound enthusiasts as you get to hunt up front and get the opportunity to assist as necessary. Sat fields are around 20 riders and are very sociable.

Ideally you need a smaller horse that is good in trappy hill country - I hunt an irish cob and connemara that are very suited to our country.

We have a fantastic kennel huntsman and a new Master this season, who has also Mastered in the past, so knows the country well. We also have a good social scene and visitors are always made very welcome.

I actually live in the United country and have visited on a few occasions. They are a very similiar sized pack but with less jumping. However the new Mastership is about to shake that all up so may go the other extreme - probably not for me though as I am no 'thruster'!

The Tanatside website which will give you more info or feel to pm me with any questions.

Sounds good! I've just taken on a yard owned by a lady called Mrs Sykes and I have started sourcing hunters for people and doing hunt livery and really just wanted to get involved in the local packs as well as South Shrops.

I had heard that the United was getting a new master who might be more inclined to jump! I'll check out the website, thank you.
