Unusual vet problem - solid stool but also watery scour? Any thoughts?

My chestnut TB has had some scour on his back legs for a few days now and I've been keeping a close eye on him to see whether he has very loose stools. The thing is that the stool is normal consistency, pretty firm, but when he goes to poo, he also seems to expel some watery fluid as well which runs down his back legs.

He is very well in himself - not losing condition, is definitely well covered (a natural fattie for a TB), eating very well (as usual) and he is fed no differently to the other two. They have ad lib haylage in the field which is good quality and not too rich nor mouldy and they are fed Pure Feed Condition which has suited them all well over the last 5 months. They've been wormed regularly as well throughout the year. He's not colicky at all and is bright and chirpy as usual.

Nothing much has changed - he just has suddenly acquired it over the last few days and I'm scratching my head a bit. Initially I thought he had just overdone it and eaten a bit too much haylage (he is greedy) but it's gone on a bit longer than I would expect.

Any thoughts? If it continues, I'll think about getting the vet but in the meantime, I wonder if anyone has any thoughts about what it might be?

My horse gets this every now and again. Its to do with a problem with digestion and usually more fibre helps stabilise him. I also think its when he's stabled for more hours so is not moving around so much. It is like diarrohhea in humans, and my horse gets stomach cramps which makes him stamp his hind feet and swish his tail and then its like a torrent of watery poo that comes out (sometimes it sounds like someone emptying a bucket of water).

If I were you I'd try Biotics first followed by Pink Powder to stabilise the hind gut as I believe the problem stems from there. http://www.naf-equine.eu/uk//products/productDetail.jsp?detail_id=biotics

Alot of horses get this in winter, a TB I used to have used to get this all winter - I think they sometimes drink too much when stabled as it's there and not halfway across a field, couple that with lots of fibre compared to grass I think the excess just comes out - also helps to lube all those compact poop nuggets out! I wouldn't worry too much, maybe put some baby oil down his legs, tail and butt crack to stop it burning or chaffing!:D

Very interested in your Vet problem. A friend of mine has an old pony25 years. For at least the last 5 years his droppings have been normal but he scours constantly. This year things seem to be getting worse.thick dark mess down his legs and in his tail, he just keeps lifting his tail and out it comes.Hes bright but does seem to have lost a little weight, but this could be due to winter months and no grass.Unfortunately my friend is reluctant to pay Vets, anyone have any idea what the cause could be? Thanks.
