My 7 yr old mare is normally never mareish infact we used to say that if we were ever breeding her we would never know when she was in season.
She has been out on a 2 wk holiday brought back to work on Saturday past. I rode her on Tuesday night in the menage and when I asked for canter it seemed as if she was caught up behind the saddle. Got of walked and trotted her out in hand for my friend but couldnt see anything obvious.
Took her schooling last night and she was soooo mareish - a complete tart to my friends gelding! Screaming and getting on like a looney when he left her and calling after him constantly! I have never seen her behave like this before! She was still stiff behind when I cantered although not as bad but still not 100%.
Basically is this stiffnes normal if mares are having a heavy season.

i dont think stiffness is linked to seasons but shes prob bit uncomfortable if shes about to have a mega season! most of us females would be any way! shes prob bit fresh from her hols too. maybe do a few days hacking and see if the stiffness goes if not get vet

have spoken to my vet about it and she said to leave it for a few days and if there was no change then she would come see her.
Its just so strange seeing her like this and i feel so sorry for her and can totally simpathise with her!
She is by no means crippled and its not every step that she takes but like everyone u just know when your horse is not 100%!

one of my friends said that her retired mare used to be stiff behind when in season because the saddle was putting pressure on the ovaries and they were feeling tender. I don't know about it myself though, just a thought..

Think you're not alone - the weird weather seems to have set our yards Mares off completely. My mare can be mareish but she just being strange at the moment! At least two of them are being quite aggressive at the moment - my mare wouldn't let me to the back of her stable - never happened b4 and another tried to attack the yard owner in the field. Sure they will settle shortly.
