Hello everyone, i came back o the forum (used to be Heys) a couple of weeks ago to ask for help re my horses sudden lameness. After a trip to hospital we discovered a keratoma(sp?) had done significant damage to his pedal bone and he had very high ringbone and sidebone which is now the main cause of his lameness.

I was wondering if you had any thoughts on or heard of Adequan? This is going to be our next move but the i am a little worried as the last injection into his foot seems to have brought on nothing but further lameness (not lami, we checked).

Also would like to know if anyone has heard of the operation that is available for these types of conditions and if you know of success rates. Would be really grateful if anyone has had any experience of severe ring and sidebone and could pass on experiences or advice, B is only eight and this is really breaking my heart.

Many thanks

Sorry no advice re the particular condition.
My boy finished a course of adequan 6 weeks ago, he was nearly 100% sound on it having been about 4/10 in off fore and 2/10 in near fore with navicular before treatment began.
I began riding him again (no lungeing due to particular condition) on veterinary advice after he was given all clear but 2 weeks after treatment stopped he went lame again, he is now totally crippled (worse than ever before).
I don't know whether it was the work that worsened his condition, the ground conditions, etc. All I know is he is much worse now.
He's having another course of Adequan but so far has shown little improvement.
I'm not convinced, the vet is keen on Adequan as it is an intermuscular injection and therefore has none of the complications of joint injections, I do them myself which saves money, time and stress for my boy.
All I can say is that I did see a dramatic improvement whilst he was undergoing the treatment but that he was much worse afterwards!

Hi

one of my horses was lame- my vet fully investigated and diagnosed a problem with the joint cartilage and so the joint was injected with Adequan- he had 2 injections- with about a two week gap between each injection and it has made my horse so much better (along with restricted exercise)- joint injectons are fine as long as your vet knows exactly what they are treating. Adequan does not contain a painkiller as such, so if the Adequan doesnt work, an injection with a corticosteroid may be the next step. I must admit I have always been wary of joint injections however as long as your vet knows what they are treating and also uses antibiotics to lessen the risk of infection, you should give it a go!! my horse is now in full work again and is so much better than before.

can i make a suggestion? there is a product called Conquer that is an oral Hayaluronic Acid dosed at 100mg per serving. it is given orally and is an alternative to injections or at least can run along side adequan or other HA products (i know Adequan isn't HA but a PSGAG) i know a few people who have used it on similar cases to those mentioned and it has been effective. Just thoight it was worth letting you know.

Thankyou to everyones replies. Unfortunatley i have been to see a horse trainer today, one who's opinion i trust beyond any vet and she also knows Bailey. We discussed the injections and seen as the last injection he had made him 10x worse it is unlikley that i will end up going down this route. He has been in pain for a long time and the vet was amazed at just how high his pain threshold must be now, he's worked hard without complaining...can't believe he was out hunting with me last month! That is just how quickly his condition has deteriorated but now i have seen the x-rays and seen how high the sidebone is i feel i only have two options left that would be fair to B. Retirement or pts. I am struggling with these as you can imagine, my heart says one thing, my head another. I will keep in touch, thank you again for your replies.
