I thought it was about time I did a little update on my gang, I dont post that much anymore (was a regular poster in the 'olden' (!) days) but have made a lot of friends from here.

For those of you who don't know I own a mare, Blossom, a rising 4yr old by Johnson (Jazz x Flemmingh) out of my mare, and a yearling filly by UDH Vince (Gribaldi x Hofnar) also out of my mare.

At weaning last October my mare, who is now 19yrs old, came back to me to be bought back into work on the basis I would see how she went. The plan was to just get her schooling lightly and hacking and maybe find a sharer. However she seemed to go from strength to strength and I decided (after a few lessons with my trainer) to have a go at competing her again. She had only done a years worth of ridden work in the last 6yrs and hadn't been out competing, in fact the last time she had competed she won the Petplan Novice Open at the Winter Champs in 2007 (after which she was put straight in to foal to have my now 4yr old).

Anyway long story short, first couple of outings were spent getting her to relax again then made the discovery that she had ulcers. Since shes been on her treatment the difference has been outstanding. She looks (and feels) amazing.

We went to Kingston Maurward 2 weeks ago and won the Elementary (BD) which I was thrilled with. Then this weekend we went to Crofton to have a go at our first Medium test. I wasn't expecting much as I'd only started riding her in a double two days before and we'd never done an affliated Medium together. Anyway we did a test that I was pleased with for our first go, and by some small miracle she won!!!!! I'm so so proud of her, shes a horse in a million, I don't know many 19yr olds who after nearly 6yrs off competing and only 6months back in work after breeding two foals could come out and win their first Medium test.

So shes already qualified for Elementary Petplans, hopefully Hickstead Dressage Masters Semis at Elementary, part qualified for Medium Petplans. I want to get her qualified for the Dressage Masters at Medium and also the Elementary and Medium music Regionals aswell.

Hers a pic of her modelling her pink HKM set:

And a video of her in our lesson on Thursday - first time in double bridle and we were working on getting her to stretch into the contact. As you can see the weather was bizarre - went from sun, to hail, to thunder, then lightening followed by torrential rain....

And just because, this is my 4yr old, Jupiter - I'm bringing him back into work myself, hes big and gangly so just lots of hacking, hill work and pole work to build him up. He wont be ready for the 4yr olds this year but hope to do 5yr olds with him next year.

And this is my yearling filly, Paris:

How exciting, Bloss has just been an amazing little horse! Can't believe how time flies it only seems like yesterday you were doing novices on her.
Has the Bowen/ silver lining herbs all helped ?

B.T.W-do they reply to emails at your yard been trying to get in touch with them

Shes not on the silver lining herbs, too expensive. I researched herbs myself and decided which ones to put her on from that.

Marion came out last wkend actually as she was a bit tight, she really does have magic hands and Bloss loves her! She said she can cure her headshaking, so treatment starts on that on 29th, will be interesting to see if she can.

PM me re the yard, what are you trying to find out about as I can probably answer any questions.

Bloss looks fab, how lovely that she is back out and about and doing so well. The babies look like chips of the old block, she certainly stamps them.

Well done

Jups looks just like her and is a similar colour in the summer.

They all have the same head/eye.

Paris is going to be finer (which is a surprise as stallion was a bigger build than Johnson) and shes got mega long legs so I should think will make 17'2ish whereas Jups is 16'2 (just) at the moment so will make 17hh once hes totally filled out and finished growing.

To be honest you can just do what I did and get the same results for much cheaper if you research herbs yourself.

Yes best to call, although Nina is at work today so probably won't answer. She doesnt work Wednesdays or Thursdays or anytime between 6 and 8 in the evening is good to call.

nm - thank you, she certainly doesnt look (or feel) her age :)

dc - Jups is already proving to be a cool customer and has a beautiful movement, so I hope he will do well in the dressage arena. As for Paris, only time will tell! Shes very sweet and easy to do though.

The Omeprazole is the main reason why she is in such good condition now (although the rest of her diet is carefully monitored I am sure its all to do with the fact that she had ulcers). Shes in the best condition of all the horses on the yard and at 19 thats no mean feet! :D

How much are you feeding? She was on 3 sachets a day for the first month, has done a tub of Global Herbs Acid-X and is now back on the Omeprazole (the Ab-Plus one) at 1 sachet a day maintenance level to see how she goes.

My barefoot trimmer said they need to take breaks off the Omeprazole, something to do with osteo-arthritis i think, so shes doing a month on, then an ulcer supplement for a month, then month on etc.

She is having 3 packets a day at the moment but then she will stay on 1 indefinatley, I have spoken to my internal medicine specialist vet and he said omeprazole is one drug that has no known side effects in horses and the only problem is the cost, so Im happy for her to stay on it!

Oh really? Thats very interesting, as I would rather just keep Bloss on it too as opposed to keep buying other supplements. It only works out £1 a day if they are on 1 sachet a day so not too bad really. (Thats of the one with the probiotic in).

Will be interesting to see how your horse gets on with it :)

Blossom looks gorgeous, and what beautiful babies :) Loving the pink HKM set, would it be really wrong of me to buy that for my grey gelding? Especially when I'm unfortunate enough to ride in a pink HS1 as well.... :D Lovely to get an update from one of the longer serving members...

Well Jups will be sharing Bloss's 'sets' and i've already threatened him with the pink one!

It would look lovely on a grey :)

I was really lucky with mine, got the bandages and saddlecloth for just £10 inc postage off a lady on BD forum!

Mines been on Omprazole since 2009. I did use the sachets but i find the paste much more effective for this particular horse when feeding at maintenance rate. Having said that though i dont ever like the idea of feeding a drug of any sort long term, but with this horse im stuffed.

Having said that i do use the sachets on one of the oldies & they work well for him.

Dont you just love mares? I do, never had one till we bough one 4 years ago and would have another one any day of the week. You just would not believe her age, and its lovely to see photos of Blossom after hearing about her on the forum. Well done you for doing so well. I will keep all fingers crossed for you. She looks like she has bred a cracker of a foal, which will be fun in a few years time. What a cutie.

I am really glad I read this as I have a 19 year old cob who I did dressage on until 4 years ago when Mini TX's activities took precedence. He's been a happy hacker with the odd bit of schooling since then, and I have been thinking about getting back into it, gradually. Its given me a bit of hope, as I did wonder if I had left it a bit long, but he is in good health with no problems.

Bloss looks fab - I am so pleased that you are both still having fun and enjoying it all with 2 rather smart home breds as well!

Thank you everyone :)

TX - do it! Its all in the management, I'm really careful what I feed (all SS and PureFeeds) and she's competing barefoot too for the first time!
