Now he is off with my X-rays and MRI scans to talk to Trevor jones, my vet who did the MRI and my farrier. Then hopefully another couple of weeks and the shoes are off.
He said my boys feet were supprisingly good considering and did a Barr pressure test of 3 Barr on his backs with no reaction. Apprantley this is good as his back feet are hard already.
He also said my horse was moving sound on straight hard surface in trot and that from the MRI he had read he thought he would be far far worse.
Last it was I thought his pads were an inch high but forgot the go across his whole foot so the raise is only about 8mm max but he wears Platforms lol

Anyway treating ep is called Ashley and seems great.

I can't wait to be a barefoot brigade bird:-)

Watch this space!!!! And keep the advice coming and the strories, even bad ones please

EP's should definitely be able to do basics such as read x-rays and MRIs just like a farrier would. If not, they wouldn't be EPs. The curriculum involves training by vets in diagnosing techniques and imaging. Why don't you check out the EPAUK & UKNHCP board's website? It's very informative and will help you understand what they do better.

That reminded me of when my farrier looked at my horses navicular x-rays he said ''gosh they are terrible its like broken glass in there'', in fact the vet laughed when I mentioned farrier had seen and said this, he said ''they are perfectly normal and the only thing affecting your horse is a tiny 1-2mm nodule on the navicular bone which is rubbing the navicular bursa'', he also mentioned that farrier do like to think they can read x-rays but infact they can't! (Oh and my farrier is a remedial one)

Yes Ive just checked the website, within the 2 year diploma they do a 3 day course plus home study on that particular part of the curriculum and this covers 'awareness' of MRI etc. That wouldn't be sufficient for me to consider that someone can 'read' xrays or MRI..It takes a lot more training to learn diagnostic techniques from xrays etc

Is an EP qualified to read xrays and MRIs then? Do they have significant medical training?

Lol. Let's hope so hey? Otherwise he will sound like a right twit when he is discussing the MRI with the bet that did it won't he. 😊

I have 2 horses unshod..it doesn't upset me at all, I'm just very careful about the claims people make about what they can or can't do. I'm sure this chap can discuss the xrays with the vet but whether he can read them is another issue.

Perhaps you should let the owner of the horse worry about that? If the EP feels confident to interperet radiographs then he has the oppertunity to prove it to the attending vet.

Oh ok, would you care to enlighten us what is sufficient? That way we can can make better informed choices in the future :)
