Well...... it was an abcess!!! - And it has burst!! i've never seen anything like it it looked like a custard creatured had been massacred it was up the walls on the floor all over the mares leg on her face etc etc properly minging like someone had flung mashed poptato everywhere

It is stll pouring out of her the most gunk i've ever seen in a horse, the vet says it will take at least a week to drain - her leg had over doubled in size!!- ithe burst at the top of her leg so the only problem is getting the gunk to drain upwards from her leg!!

Anyone had something similar - how did you drain the bottom of the leg (She can lay down now and that seems to encourage a lot of Ick out!)

yes ............my mare had an abcess the size of a rugby ball under her stomach and over a period of 3 months she had eight absecces on the top of her leg.
due to the abcesses having to be kept open and syringed twice a day we changed her bedding to paper so that it did not stick to the wounds.............yes she did lay down ok.

I hope you neddie is ok......don't be tempted to allow it to seal up until your vet has agreed all 'gunk' is gone.

Poor horse! She must have got a foreign body that tracked up the leg to cause that sort of a problem. The only thing I can recommend is a gentle massage with a warm towel or such like. If the horse is able to move around that will help as well. I assume she is on some form of antibiotics.
