Hi, I thought I would update you on Obe's progress. He went into horsepital on Thursday 28th for further investigation. Under sedation they drilled a hole in his head to access the sinus directly with the camera. All looked clear for a while but with a second opinion the surgeon found a black mass and diagnosed a fungal infection. He had a second hole drilled to allow a tool to be used to dig out the fungus. They then flushed it with liquid but the liquid kept missing the spot so they are now using anti-fungal powder once a day to hopefully beat the infection. As the are using powder they have been able to staple up one hole and just plug the other for daily access. I must admit it isn't nice to see him with gauze sticking out of his head but it's for his own good. I visited him on Thursday pm and he looked like road kill and was still sedated, on Friday he wasn't sedated but was very vacant and agitated with his head. I went again yesterday and he was much more normal but he hadn't been sedated since Friday as they can do his powder with just a twitch. Fingers are crossed for Friday 5th as he is being re scoped and hopefully will come home.

Fingers crossed for you but that sounds like really good news. My horse has been having a few nosebleeds so we got the vet out who scoped her and thankfully found nothing wrond with her gutteral pouches. Vet thinks that she has an infection in her sinuses so she was on an intensive course of antibiotics however she did have another smaller bleed about halfway through her course. Vet says that if she has another then we are possibly looking at cysts in her sinuses and although outlook is good she may have to undergo what your boy has been through. I was just wondering if Obe has been having discharge/bleeds. If Avey has any discharge it is mostly clear- occasionally white but never thick or lumpy!! once again fingers crossed for you- its horrid isnt it especially as you cant see what is cauing the problem!!

Very interested in your post as Penfold has a small bleed after eventing sometimes , about an egg cup full.I had him scoped but no sign of fungal infection but they thought he was displacing his palate anyway and he is now in a grackle and tongue guard for xc. The gurgling noise he made xc has stopped but he is not breathing as easy as he did. Can I ask where your horse went , they want mine to go to RVC and it will be £750 for 4 days of treadmill training.
