Update on ebony poorly mare

Hi all, just a quick update on Ebs, she ate about a cake of haylage overnight... Maybe a bit more, despite blending up carrots in her breakfast she got bored of it so added a few nuts to it and she finished it off, no results on bloods yet but she is looking better, not as perky as yesterday morning but still far better than two days ago. she still looks bad weight wise but now on the bute she isn't tucked up so looks better, nowhere near as hollow. Sun is shining and I checked with vets and she's gone out into a small area for half an hour of grass with Ben. I will post some pics from today later when on computer x thank you for all your well wishes x x

And now another flipping drama, hence no pictures this evening, after having half hr in sun and being allowed a nibble at some crappy grass she was given lunch a la antibiotics and completely refused it, came in about 2 and did a poo in stable and a wee and about half three with a lot of coaxing and extra sugar beet ate lunch to which I added her bute and another scoop of probiotic because she seemed a bit off. Put it down to being tired from sunshine as all horses were dozing away ignoring their hay inside, stayed up at yard till half seven, by then still no more poo, not touching hay or water! Decided to go home (2 mins drive) have tea, shower and come back and check 9pm no change and a lot of gut sounds even for her, slightly tucked up too, so vet advised 30mins brisk walk to see if anything shifts... NOTHING!!! she did try and nibble at grass though so can't be that bad! So it seems like she's now got a mild colic! Vet suggests waiting it out as she's not spasming and even on bute would be rolling, sweating etc if it were anything bad, so got to leave her and do another check in an hr, then he suggests check in the morning!! Flipping hell, I mean she is always well and now 3 things in 3 days and I find out that it's 4 day wait on bleeding bloods! Just worried now as she is not a colicky mare :(

Doesn't it!! In al 11 yrs of owning her shes had one major chest infection 2 yrs in, 2 courses if antibiotics for that, 1 low grade pneumonia... Sputolosin prescribed and a bad fall, but of physio! Nothing major at all and never broke the bank!! Now she's broken in to the bank and getting down and dirty with robbing it! She is insured but I'm going the costs won't be too much so I can cover it myself... But I may reconsider sending Ben off to be backed lol, may end up using his breaking fund and doing him myself!
 
Well, that little dramas over now, Ebs has taken a dump (well 2 more if you want to be precise) and was a lot brighter again this morning, she had gobbled a bit of hay down, water bucket had gone down, tummy no where near as rummbley and ate breakfast without hesitation :) oh plus head was up this morning, ears forward and That good old whinny to greet me, can't beat that! :D :D

They can be an awful worry at times :(.
 
Cheers quirky, yes they can! I was bricking it because I've always gone on the rule that horses that regularly have mild colic generally pull through, I remember as a kid YOs mare used to colic a few times a yr but only mildly and died of old age about 5 yrs ago, it's always the ones that don't that get hit by the nasty colic and knowing my first pony died that way... Well colic has always scared me! But she was a bright little button today so... Phew!! :D
 
Yeah, I was really surprised about the wait on the bloods too! Although they did initial tests the day it was taken which didn't show anything glaring, so its not
Like I'm waiting for the full results for that long.
 
Hi all, little update for you, but of confusion on the bloods, they were sent to lab but vet asked for them to be held and not tested yet although the other vet gave the impression that they were being tested?! So, no blood test results. There is however some positives, she is more herself and less tired in the afternoon, she was getting a bit depressed too and she's now out grazing for about 4-5 hrs a day, this is helping her spirits loads! She point blank refused her feed with her last dose of bute, antibiotics and pancur, no matter what I put with it I just kept getting a resounding no! She's eating almost normal quotas of hay and now back on feed sans meds... Which she is thrilled about :D

The. Vet gave me some paste bute in a syringe for the weekend in case she deteriorates but at the moment she's a lot better than she was so going to see how it goes. I keep taking pics but my computer has bitten the dust so can't upload them on here at the moment. Weigh tape has shown a slight increase but I reckon that has more to do with her not being in pain and therefore relaxing more, so still nothing conclusive but my darling girl is feeling a bit more herself and that's very positive :) vet wants me to keep weight taping her and watching for any decrease which we obviously don't want to see, because then he will be using scary and bleak words like 'probable tumours'. I am however feeling that she may be on the mend ans now it's pretty much a waiting game, field is also being fertised tomorrow so if all goes well she can go back in there in a week :)

Thank you all very much for your kind words, suggestions and support this past week, you've been fab. Also, want to applaud AVS vets who have been amazing, i changed to them when this started because we were too far away from my old vets, they have been really good, coming straight out to her twice, no waits, and talking to me late at night when she colicked, then ringing me up the next morning to see how she was, I am so glad I found them, they made a huge difference!

Fingers crossed that soon I will be able to post a pic or two of her in her field munching away and packing on the weight

Me too, she ate all her non med tea last night and I thought she ate her breakfast, however she had just tipped it out of the bowl! Again at tea she decided food could go to hell! A bit concerning as she has never in her life been fussy or refused food but she is in better spirits and still eating hay and grass, so not going to get worked up over it, just monitor closely and report to vet on Monday, I gave her some bute just invade she was refusing due to pain and left food with her. Bit of a bleeding roller coaster this one but I am feeling lots more positive than a week ago. And Ben is being a saint so that helps loads

Well, some very positive news to report :) all weekend ebony had the vet and I confused and a increasingly worried, despite being way more herself and looking far better she completely refused her dinner, she wasn't tucked up so I didn't give her any further bute after Friday night. Appetite wise she was eating hay and grass no problems but hard feed was a complete no no even though meds were not in it, vet and I spoke yesterday and he was concerned and we agreed that further tests would be done on her bloods.

Then I had a brainwave, the night before I had walked past her stable with a scoop of chaff to put in bens feed bowl and she had tried to pinch a mouthful so I borrowed someone else's fees bowl, different style and different colour than hers, put the same feed in that she had just refused and what do you know, she ate her dinner and her breakfast no problem!!! This mare is way too intelligent, I reckon she learnt to associate her feed bowl with her nasty tasting food!!! We had a right laugh today when I called the vets!

So it looks like she really is on the mend :) I'm unable to post pics of her now as my computers not working but she is loads better and on her way to being her old self :)

Good god. Never let her loose. She may well try to take over the world, and succeed :eek: Too smart for her own good!

Glad to hear she's doing so much better :)
 
Me too! It's great to see her getting back to normal :) I always knew she was smart but using her brain almost cost me an extra blood test and possible call out! All over the type of feed bowl! Honestly, it really did make me chuckle when I found out the problem... I may write to Mensa and see if they are interested in her ;) it's actually really nice that in such a worrying week she managed to stump everyone with something totally non medical!! X I shall upload a couple of 'now photos' to face book and pop the link on here when I have chance and you can all see how much better she is :D
