The wee man was ok as I checked on him through the night - drinking a little and pooing. At the 6am check I noticed that he had not drunk much more water from the 3am check and he didn't want his breakfast. Have turned them out with hay nets tied to the gates and filled all outside water buckets with warm water. Is there anything else I can do to encourage him to drink / eat. I am really stuck and and thinking about calling the vet again

You could try something called horse quencher. It comes in sachets from tack shops etc and you put it in the water. (It does have sugar in so not suitable for lami prone etc.) But I use it to keep a horse hydrated in the summer and to get him to drink at shows. I've never known a horse refuse it.

If you are not already, soak the hay and add water to the feed. A warm wet bran mash is wonderfully moving and horses do like them. Just warm water and bran made up to sloppy porridge consistency. It has no real nutitional value - just warms the horse up and gets fluid into them.

Finally you could add salt or electroytes to the feed to stiumlate thirst - but check that with your vet first.

Cases are on the high currently as horses are not drinking enough fluid, I wouldn't fancy drinking freezing water. Mine coliced the other week, vet said she has had about 30 in the last fortnight. Keep him warm and get some fluid in him, I feed fast fibre so I made mine a really sloppy feed to get fluid in. Did your vet give yours any buscupan or pain relief?

U can give warm water with some orange juice in and could wet haylage / hay of your mare allowsed to eat that now , of concerned call ur vet of worried x

I tried wet hay and apple juice in his water last night, wouldn't touch the hay although the apple juice has been a bit of a sucess. He is definately brighter today even showing an interest when we were fixing fences this morning. Fingers crossed he keeps improving:)
