I have just come back from our yard and on the way drove past the farm that was broken into last night. The tree had chains put round it and then literally broken in half to block the road, the road is clear but you can see the tree all smashed into the fence

The police have said the farm was targetted specifically for their arabs and 2 were stolen from St Albans last week, my friends stable doors were all opened to see if there was anything worth stealing - luckily there wasn't. Apparently 'scouts' mark yards either with tape around trees or arrows on the road and then another lot come and do the stealing, a lorry was seen in the layby last night by a farm worker who reported it to the police as suspicious and when the plates were checked they were false which made the police investigate so the thieves were disturbed.

Yes I have also heard of thieves sussing out a place and using markers too. There has also been instances of the fences being broken, but then patched up to look normal for easy horse removal. So check your fencing everybody.

very scary indeed, thanks for the update. mines cozy in his stable next to a private house so hes safe for now.

It's absolutely terrifying the sheer amount of thefts or attempted thefts which are taking place. Make it as difficult as possible by visiting yard at different times so people can't get familiar with your routine, make sure horses are freezemarked, have tack marked etc. Always concerns me as to quite how vulnerable our horses are with all the thieving scumbags around.

I used to live near the area and our local 'characters' used to block the lane when they wanted to flytip (as no direct eyewitness meant no prosecution possible), sounds like similar tactics. Not nice.
The only thing that really protected the horses in our yard were the YOs band of Rottweilers!, these characters dont like big dogs.
