Story from last night big fall on a rock last night horse has removed skin from knee wasn't sure how to go about treating it as it is so big.

My mare is not lame or in pain (as she is a REALLY big wimp if in pain) but is not botheed by this. She thinks i'm fussing a lot!

well these are the pictures!

kali leg pics - not for the squeemish among us!!

there is a lage flap of skin which is well attached and has a good blood supply.

I have given her bute, cold hosed it which made it much less swollen than in the pics - that is what it looked like this morning before the big clean up!! and really hibiscrubbed it.

My mare has been brill didn't flinch hasn't fussed, did make a huge fuss about a small wound on her hind tho!!

There is nothing to stitch, just not sure what to do to make it heal successfully. She is now out in the field naked except for cream, dry animalintex and bandage and a stable bandge on other leg

Ooh that is nasty. Just try to keep it clean and wait. It will take a while for this skin to grow back over and keep an eye out for proud flesh occurring. Best of luck.

Have you had the Vet out to check it? I am concerned that it does not hurt her. Does that not point to nerve damange? She really should be in pain, stiff and lame having done that much damage. It looks really really nasty, poor little thing

To be honest if my horse had that injury, I'd call the vet, even if it's just to discuss the injury with them. My vet will look at an injury via a picture e-mailed to them so doesn't cost anything.

The vet may say that you are doing everything correctly and carry on. At least it will put your mind at rest.

Hope she gets better soon.

she can definatly feel it as she wasn't that pleasd when the hibiscrub stung, she's not not in a lot of pain with it, this morning she wa stiff and swollen but i walked her in hand an she freed up, she's had bute last night too.

I'm hoping it looks horrid but she ha just taken the skin off on the top there is no bleeding or penetrating injury, i think i'm going o keep bandaging it and hope to e some ulceration buy monday - it is vry clean, if it goes off i'll get the vet to do anti biotics etc.

it is awful as she is so lovely, she is not at all upset with her self, i did shout at her (not that it made a difference) whn she galloped round the field this aft.!!

Not sure I would classify it as a wound, looks more like a skinning to me

Has it weeped or bled at all?

Have to agree and say I would at least call the vet and check that I was doing the right thing. I hate injuries on joints and have seen too many go wrong when people haven't acted quickly enough.

Bless her, Well you are obviously more experienced than me, I would of been on the phone to the vet in a flash

probably why I permanently have a vets bill to pay. I don't take anything to chance as I am not confident enough. It looks really really sore. Hope she is better soon

Looking at that reminds me of when my mum had a skingraft they took a huge patch of skin off her thigh and buttock, that barely bled and to start with didnt bother her at all, however within 24 hours it started to weep ( perfectly normal as the body is trying to cleanse ) and she said it was possibly the most painful thing ever, it really poured lots of almost clear liquid.
With that there wasnt really much she could do keep it clean, and dressed, be slightly careful with the hibiscrub as it is really strong and drys skin out to quickly we use betadine ( iodine stuff).
Keep a close eye on it might be a case she could do with antibiotics??

I would never take a chance on a wound near or on a joint, even if it looks quite minor - which this one doesn't tbh. Horses have a tiresome habit of getting infections in their flesh wounds, and once that gets into a joint, it's bad news.

I would get the vet, I am sure he would give antibiotics as a precaution.

Right just phoned my vet who is brill, E is going to come down on monday and give her some antibiotics and fetch me more bute, showed him the pictures on line and he says that if it was smaller he'd not even come out but if the flappy bit doesn't stick he'll trim it off for me, hose her twice a day, and keep it covered till he sees it and turn her out as much as poss. No point incoming out today as it isn't life threatnening etc and has stabilised well, he also said chek fo clear leakage too

thank you for yor repies as i absolutley forgot you can phone up the vets brill idea about the internet too!! you know how dim you go when you are worried.

i posted last night on your post, about my horses knee injury. i would get the vet as stopping infection at this stage is a priority, the only thing i would be worried about other than that is if the bursal (sp) sack of fluid has been damaged as this lubricates the joint, your vet may want to scan the knee to check.
your horses wound looks worse than alfies did but his was higher up and infection got into the wound and pooled in his knee despite being on very high doses of antibiotics from the day of his accident.
good luck, you may have better luck at keeping the infection at bay as its getting drier now so not as much mud.

oooh, nasty. Glad that you called the vet for advice tho. These things need looking at really in case of infection as said above. A friend recently had a new horse and she took a big piece of skin off her hind leg, vet came out, bandaged and left it for 3 days. Friend took it off after 3 days on vets advice and it had dried nicely and looked a lot better. I hope that everything goes ok and she makes a full recovery. Give her an extra hug from me.

I mean't to say earlier but I forgot and I was just flying out of the door. One of my cats was stood on by a horse a few years ago. Her front leg was broken and all the flesh from her armpit right down to her toes was completely stripped off. You could easily see the bones in her feet and her leg - it was quite horrific actually.

Anyway I took her to the vet and the biggest issue was the risk of infection because she had absolutely no skin covering most of her leg. It was very touch and go for many months but then the vets came up with a new covering - it was impregnated with charcoal. It was the turnaround to be honest and it was quite remarkable.

I don't remember how many months it took for it all to heal up and I don't even want to think about how much it cost, but the end of the story is that it did infact heal up. All the skin grew back again and if she hadn't been run over by a truck a year later then I might say it had all been worth it.....

Anyway just thought I would mention it - you may wish to speak it over with your vet. Over here we have something called Wonder Dust and it is basically charcoal with other medication in it - this may be of use to you?
